Customer Reviews of Portabout 5 Infant Seat with LATCH - Majestic
Great Seat - for the most part We purchased this seat before our son was born in Feb., and are still using it with him at 6 months. One of the side effects of my pregnancy was a nerve problem that left my hands numb and without strength, so the one-handed, push down handle was a life saver for me, in fact one of the main reasons for choosing this seat. It installed easily and securely in my Honda Passport, with just enough recline to keep my child's head from slumping in sleep once he mastered neck control. In my husband's Mercury Sable it sits too upright. Also, the extra base we bought for his car gets stuck on the seat, and comes loose in the tightening area as you are trying to wrestle the seat out. The canopy comes off easily, and is flimsy (but all the ones we looked at were), and the fabric is a little too lightweight - not sturdy enough - it got rips from where it rubs the wall where we store it in the house. It is cool, and my son seems very comfortable in it, however. Overall, this has been a good seat. I can't say enough about the convenience of the one-handed handle......
Good, but a few flaws
In general, we've been happy with this car seat. However, please be aware that we have noticed several flaws:
-- The seat can be tricky to get out of the base. You have to pull the release handle and lift directly up, not at an angle. If you pull at an angle, the whole thing gets jammed and you have to wrestle with it.
-- Also, the visor kind of stinks. It's not big enough to block out much sun, and it isn't anchored at all. At 5 months, our son started pulling the visor all the way down to his waist and chewing on the top of it. (Also not very effective in sun control.) It hasn't held it's shape well.
If we have another baby, we'll probably buy another car seat. We've used this one for 7 1/2 months so far and it's starting to look worn -- we use it a lot. I'll look for a seat that has a better visor and is less tricky to get in and out of the base.
Also, I've never used that attachable blanket. It was not nearly as soft as our son's other blankets and we've never really found it helpful.
On the plus side, our son seems comfortable in it. The handle is comfortable for us. The pattern is cute and non-cliche for a gender-neutral print. We like the LATCH system.
I dont' feel like we made a mistake buying this one, I just wish I had been better informed when we bought it.
It has worked for me so far.
When buying a car seat for my daughter, eight months ago, I did a lot of research and found this to be the seat with the best reviews in its price range. I have had a couple of run-ins with the seat getting stuck in the base. And for the first few days I had trouble with the handle. But overall I have had very few complaints. We have never used the latch, so I cannot speak on that. However, I have moved the base in and out a various vehicles without any problem. My daughter is on the smaller side and she seems to fit quite nicely in it. I had to hold her head up a few times while driving, but I have heard that happens with many babies, in a variety of seats. One really great feature is the foot cover and blanket. The blanket isn't very warm, but it makes for a great wind and rain barrier. The blanket snugged right up under the canopy keeping the baby dry while allowing her to breath freely.
