Customer Reviews of Portabout 5 Carseat with LATCH - Baby Elephant Walk Print
Looks are deceiving I HATE this seat. It is imposible to install regardless of the vehicle, and in some vehicles it can not be properly installed. It doesn't latch properly, we are always pushing down on it where the baby's feet are to get it to latch. It is also imposible to adjust the tightness of the shoulder straps while baby is in the seat. Also forget the canopy if you use the carrier, adjusting the handle just pulls the canopy right off. And those are just a few of the problems with this seat. The seat in the store looked great and appeared to be easy to use, but looks are deceiving. Oh and don't bother calling their customer service, they say all of their customers just love their product and I must just be installing it incorrectly.
Could have done better
My husband and I purchased this car seat along with a stroller travel system, miscarried and were able to use the travel system (one year later) with our now 5 month old son. He grew out of it a few weeks ago due to weight and height requirements. Due to evenflo's warranty and/or policy; we had the stroller and car seat too long after original purchase date. The stroller is not carried anymore (thank god) it had quite a few flaws and I am sorry that I spent my money on it. As for the car seat, I found only a few flaws. The Z shaped handle is really of no use (maybe it is a nice feature for you though), the material and nylon straps are not very durable (washing) and the canopy just plain sucks. Canopy attachments on each side are sticking, and also loose when trying to adjust (this seat was only used for 4 months). The base or car seat attachment on the bottom is a terrible design and is a real pain!!! Have a pro or local police (depending on location and programs) install your car seat to ensure maximum safety in a collision. My son would fall asleep and stay asleep in the seat even after arriving home from short or long trips in the car, and it can rock (manually). The swivel handle is really difficult to use unless you nearly put all your weight or more on it to rotate, though (forgot that complaint). I give this car seat a 3 due to my personal experience with the overall product, but evenflo customer service was very disappointing and my complaints to them for broken or malfunctioning parts (stroller and car seat) were basically ignorred. Seems to me that evenflo is another company out to make a buck and dont give a damn about our childrens safety!! I will go with another baby company and see what happens.
The GOOD and the BAD...
I bought this seat sinply because a coworker gave me a great Evenflo Travel System stroller without the seat, so I wanted something that would work with the stroller and had a base for the car. All in all, for the price and the features, I'd possibly purchase this seat again, now that I know the quirks.
The GOOD -
This seat has VERY adjustable straps, which was great for our quickly growing son.
Our little guy seemed pretty comfortable in this seat.
Evenflo has done a great job making their items work with each other, and this seat has been very secure with my stroller (as well as in shopping carts, etc)
The base was great to keep in my little Eclipse while we could still get the seat in and out of our Durango.
My "little" 20-lb guy still fits great in the seat and will for a while yet.
The BAD -
This seat is IMPOSSIBLE to get into the car without the base - we have to be very, very careful not to cut ourselves on the plastic openings for the seatbelt. (However, my teenagers have no trouble getting the seat in - I guess their hands are smaller!)
Plus, the padding from the seat cushion is already being torn out by the seatbelt after only 4 months.
The base is horrid - my carseat gets stuck in it appr. 25% of the time. At first I thought it was just because I often have to put the seat in or take it out at a weird angle because my car is so small, but after reading the other reviews I realize it's not just MY base.
Adjusting the straps is a NIGHTMARE - luckily, it doesn't have to be done too often!
I thought the thing came without instructions, and when I was trying to figure the thing out, I finally accidentally ran across them UNDER the seat pad! Rotten place for instructions, especially when there are no instructions that tell you where the instructions are!
