The good, the bad, and the ugly...
The good: the original season of Pokemon. The animation wasn't exactly the best ever, but the plotline was interesting and the characters fascinating. The individual episodes were all unique and unpredictable. Although Ash was obnoxious, it was wonderful watching his relationships with Misty, Brock, and Pikachu develop. The Pokemon themselves were wonderful as well. Each had its own distinct personality, a rarity in a monster of the week show like this. And of course, we can't forget good ol' Team Rocket, the classic goofy, wants-to-be-bad-but-isn't-really villain duo. I found myself really caring about the characters and what happened to them (although several times I found myself wishing Ash would just fall off a cliff...)It was truly heartwarming and interesting, a quality most cartoons I had ever seen lacked. It was the first anime I had ever seen, and I'm glad this was my introduction to the genre.
The bad: Pokemon Orange Islands. Okay, they weren't that bad, but they weren't nearly as good as the original season. The lack of Brock's oversexed disposition seriously hindered the comedy, and Tracy was even more annoying than Ash, if that's even possible. To be fair, about midway, Pokemon was starting to lose its popularity, but I just didn't find this season as fun as the last.
The ugly: Pokemon, the Johto Journeys. This season is awful. Although Brock is back and Tracy is gone (YAY!), something is definitely missing. The new Pokemon, many of which are frankly ugly, are the focus of this season, and I miss all the original Pokemon. Pikachu isn't nearly as dynamic as he once was, with Chikorita taking precedence. And all the romantic tension between Ash and Misty? Completely disappeared. Plus, the plotlines are all VERY formulaic. They go something like this:
Ash-tachi comes upon a town where some trainer (usually a little kid) is having a problem with his/her Pokemon.
Ash-tachi tries to help him/her, to no avail.
Oh no! Team Rocket has stolen Pikachu/sabotaged something!
The messed-up Pokemon saves the day, and suddenly all is well!
Ash-tachi waves goodbye and walks off into the sunset.
Come on, you know it's true. It truly hurts me to see a once-great show decline so sharply. Once, it was a truly creative, fun show for people of all ages, with an almost universal appeal. It *deserved* to be The Next Great Thing. Now it's simply a product of people trying to continue something way too far, trying to squeeze the last penny out of it. I miss the fun character interactions, the interesting plots, the dynamic battle sequences. Hell, I even miss the bad puns that just make you groan. I miss...Pokemon...
