Customer Reviews of Pleased to Meet You
Fine. For Americans, James is still considered a fairly unknown band, yet they're first proper album was 1986's "Stutter". Since that time the band has had high (1993's "Laid) and medium (1999's "Millionaires") recordings. For me, James has never really failed in making quality music, and "Pleased To Meet You" follows in this tradition. This disc has solid musicianship by the band with typical self-conscious and cerebral musings from lead singer Tim Booth. This entry falls somewhere between "Laid" and 1997's "Whiplash" being as moody as the former and rowdy as the latter. There are always some gems on each James cd and here I found "Space", "Falling Down", "English Beefcake", "Junkie", "Getting Away With It(All Messed Up)" and "Alaskan Pipeline" as the most memorable and moving of the bunch. While "Pleased To Meet You" is not James's best work (see 1990's "James", 1992's "Seven", and 1993's "Laid") it is above most pop/alternative recordings being made today, and it is equal to 1997's "Whiplash", 1999's "Millionaires" and 1994's "Wah Wah". For long time fans, "Pleased To Meet You" is probably satisfying but leaves you wanting to return to "Laid". Brian Eno helps produce "Pleased To Meet You" but with lesser results than he achieved on "Laid". So, I'd recommend "Pleased To Meet You" to hardcore fans and brand new fans but not fans that like only the hits.
Pleasing enough.
James, for me, are a hard band to pin down. Listening to their latest album Pleased To Meet You I'm still trying to figure out if I like them or not. As with any James album there are three or four great songs here, while others fail to convince. When all the elements come together and Tim Booth can reign in his pretensions James are capable of creating a smashing pop song such as 'Laid' or 'Just Like Fred Astaire' from 99's overlooked Millionaires album. As on Millionaires, James are at their best when dealing with the earthly subjects of sex, relationships and pain - so how does Pleased To Meet You stack up?. Firstly, there is an abundance of melody and plenty of opportunities to sing along which is certainly a good thing. Too often though, a perfectly good or serviceable tune is soured by mediocre lyrics or Tim Booth's habit of 'putting-on' his other faux-spiritual/higher-being voice which sounds somewhat insincere; why do this?, when at his most natural Tim Booth can sound quite exhilirating. Hence, some tracks are rather good 'Falling Down's' lusty momentum for instance or the lighter-waving and soulful anthem 'The Shining' while others ('Junkie','Senorita')just don't work. It's patchy listening - at times exciting other times a bit grating, at least you can't call Pleased To Meet You boring.
