Customer Reviews of Playford: Apollo's Banquet
Excellent Interpretation! As an early musician I far too often hear groups simply play 'notation'. Embellishment and interpretation were vital in earlier times, and this CD is marvelous for those, as well as for the excellence of technique on authentic (modern built) instruments. This recording ranks very high in its technical and historical merits!
Sweet agony, indeed!
This is the most evocative recording of renaissance dances I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. Its bittersweet, dolorous violin harmonies are positively haunting. The tunes stayed in my head for hours --days -- after listening.
"Wild and agonizing sweetness" filled with emotion
The jacket notes to Apollo's Banquet tell of Thomas Hardy decribing a dance fiddler as evoking "the wild and agonizing sweetness of a living voice in one too highly wrought." Words can hardly describe the sound, so emotional and sweet. The acappella violin in the first piece is pure ecstasy.
