As DVD playback made the PlayStation 2 more than just a game machine, hefty multi-media features make the Sony PlayStation 3 an even more versatile home entertainment machine. Features such as video chat, Internet access, digital photo viewing, and digital audio and video will likely make it the central component of your media set-up. Still, it is first and foremost a game console--a powerful one at that.
Under the Hood
The PS3 features IBM's "Cell" processor and a co-developed Nvidia graphics processor that makes the system able to perform two trillion calculations per second. That's approximately 320 times more calculations per second than the PS2. Along with the traditional AV and composite connections, it also boasts an HDMI port, which delivers uncompressed, unconverted digital picture and sound to compatible high-definition TV and projectors. The system is capable of 128-bit pixel precision and 1080p resolution for a full HD experience.

Blu-Ray is the New Way
Sony's PlayStation 3 games are encoded onto the Blu-Ray disc media format, which can hold six times as much data as traditional DVDs. This increase in capacity--combined with the awesome power of its processor and graphics card--promises mind-blowing games once developers have learned how to fully harness the new console's power. The PS3 will also support CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats.
Sensational Controller
New gamers intuitively move the controller while playing, even though that movement has traditionally had no relation to what's going on in the game. Sony has picked up on this tendency and is using it to bring a new level of control into the PS3. Inside the controller is a high-precision six-axis sensing system that accurately detects fine movements in pitch, roll, and yaw, as well as three dimensions of movement, to control games. This means that future PS3 games will be controlled by the movements of your hands rather than just your thumbs. For example, you might be able to steer a car by holding the controller like a steering wheel.
While the PS3 controller looks much like its Dual Shock predecessors, it will lack the force-feedback vibration since that would only interfere with the sensing system. It uses Bluetooth 2.0 wireless technology and can support up to seven wireless controllers at a time. It's a hot-swappable system, so if your controller is running low on power, just pause your game and connect a USB 2.0 cable. You can continue playing while your controller recharges automatically.
Plays All PlayStation Games
The PlayStation 3 will be backward compatible with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, which means you'll be able to play all your favorite games without keeping all the old systems. The console will have slots for Memory Stick Duo, an SD slot and a Compact Flash memory slot. It comes with a pre-installed hard disc drive, which allows you to save games as well as download content from the Internet.

A Slew of New Games
A whole host of game publishers are already backing the PS3 and several have even confirmed games for the console. At the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), more than 30 titles were displayed for the system, including Gran Turismo HD, Resistance: Fall of Man, and Final Fantasy XIII. Previously announced titles include Metal Gear Solid 4, Devil May Cry 4 and Tekken 6.
Online
Sony has stated that the PS3 will have similar online connectivity and services as the next generation of Xbox Live. Calling it "an always on, always connected device," SCEI's chief technical officer Masa Chatani said the PS3 would be constantly in touch with a "PlayStation World" network "fundamentally based on community, communication commerce, and content." Technically, the infrastructure is there to make that connection. The PS3 supports 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T Ethernet, as well as IEEE 802.11 b/g wireless networking protocols.

Customer Reviews of PlayStation 3 (60GB)
Warning: Overheats!! As most people know, these gaming machines get hot. Microsoft addressed the problem with a 3YEAR WARRANTY on the 360. Sony remains in denial. Our machine overheated and stopped working after @ 2 weeks of use total...over a one-year period. Sony's games just aren't as good as WII and 360, so nobody played this console much. With mediocre software and delicate hardware, I recommend that you wait until Sony addresses all their problems and focuses on the consumer, not the stock value.
Stop Pointless Updates
I purchased a Sony PS3 to play video games. Now, every time I turn the PS3 on Sony is fixing their mistakes and wasting GAME PLAYERS time with constant updates. I do not want to spend my time downloading updates just because Sony did not properly setup their machines when they first shipped them. I have now had to spend 4 hours updating items that should never have been a problem in the first place. There have been 3 time wasting updates within 4 weeks.

>Software and hardware manufactures have become so lazy that they are willing to jeopardize their good name by WASTING OUR TIME constantly updating their "broken" software. This is a mental illness now shared by a large percentage of the electronics industry. In Windows Vista, updates are constantly being forced on the consumer due to LAZY PROGRAMMERS in the corporate rush to sell more goods. I did not purchase a game machine to update the hardware every time I turn on the machine. A notice to all lazy companies, WE ARE NOT YOUR BETA TESTING GROUNDS!!! If you can not properly setup your hardware and software then do not sell your products. Customers have purchased these game machines to enjoy them, to play games, to have a fun with a group of friends. How can I have friends over to enjoy an evening of games when as soon as I turn on the machine the first thiNg it does is WHINE AT ME TO DOWNLOAD A POINTLESS UPDATE. Now a group of us can all sit around for 2 hours waiting for your company to update my machine. This is a GAME MACHINE!!!!!! It is for playing games. To all electronics manufacturers: It is no fun updating your screw ups with your constant updates. Do not waste out time anymore. Get your products right or do not sell them. Period.

>I will simply sell the PS3 on ebay, and tell anyone I can that it simply wastes your time constantly updating the software. I will recommend to all people I know that you should buy a Wii so you do not have to waste your entire evening updating the PS3 every other time you switch it on. NO MORE FORCED UPDATES SONY!!!

All In One Entertainment System - Fantastic
I finally took the plunge and purchased a PS3 60GB model since they are no longer being manufactured. I did purchase elsewhere at $15.00 over retail for a new system since the prices here for the 60GB are out of control.

>The PS3 40GB model will not play PS2 or PS1 games nor can you upgrade the hard drive. The PS3 80 GB model will play both PS2 and PS1 games BUT it is software emulated so not all of the games will play. Some that will play from my research do not play correctly. The PS3 60GB has the hardware built into it to play all PS games and one can upgrade the hard drive to any size desired.

>I'm using mine for all PS games, Blue Ray, DVDs, and as a computer hooked up to a HDTV. The game graphics are stunning as well as the Blue Ray. The PS3 upconverts my DVD's (pressing info on my HDTV tells me the resolution) into a beautiful picture. The icing on the cake is that you can load Yellow Dog Linux 6.0 on the PS3 (all models) w/o affecting the gaming ability. YDL is freeware with Mozilla Firefox web browser, Open Office and a slew of other applications.

>My entire entertainment system is now only the HDTV, SAT box, PS3, and surround sound receiver. In my opinion, one cannot go wrong buying any model. To get a game console, Blue Ray, DVD, and a computer off of one system with a HDTV output is simply SWEET. The only thing to consider is the ability to play PS2/1 games and upgrading the hard drive for which model to purchase. If you're leaning towards a new PS3 60 GB system...act fast before they're gone.
