Customer Reviews of Plains
The title is appropriate I have heard George Winston do much better than this, both in concert and on CD. "Forest" is one of my favorite albums, but this one is very dissapointing. As the name suggests, there are too many wide open spaces between the notes. The problem is that most of the tracks are SONGS translated for piano. So what we have is the right hand playing single-line vocal melodies and the left hand accompanying. For those appreciate true piano music composed with the instrument in mind, this album will be quite dull.
The best track on the album is "Cloudburst" which has already been recorded elsewhere. We also have a faithful rendition of Sarah McLachlan's "Angel". No amount of pedal and finger technique can replicate McLachlan's skin-tingling voice or evocative lyrics. I'm afraid this track also adds absolutely nothing to the great music collective.
The last two tracks are charming slack-key guitar pieces that still fail to make the album worth the money. I was hoping for an album that would paint a picture of great midwestern Americana musical images. Instead we get incidental music barely suitable bookstore browsing or eating in cheap steakhouse. Unless you are a diehard Winston collector, save your earnings for something else.
Not One of Winston's Better Works but Still Has Some Gems
This not one of George Winston's better works but it still actually contains some very nice pieces. As usual though, Winston still has a way of giving his listener various songs with different texture and feel. He can move from something that is very simple, slow, and easy like "Before Barbed Wire" to something that is more complicated and upbeat such as "Dubuque."
Winston, in this CD, did several cover tunes from Garth Brook's "The Dance" to Sarah McLachlan's "Angel." I actually think that these cover tunes are some of the better tracks on the CD. Sadly though, there are a few songs that are so tedious and repetitious that you just want to skip over them. Some of the more tedious songs include "Cloudburst," and "Merry Go Round."
Some of the better tracks on the CD include "Dubuque," "Before Barbed Wire," "Plains," and the cover tune "Angel." My favorite track is "Waltz for the Lonely" which is a remake of Chet Atkin's version. In the studio, they hold that last note out for a long time and that gives it an extra nice feel.
Overall, this is not one of Winston's better works, but it does contain some nice pieces. There are other Winston CD that are so much better than this one (i.e. December).
Not his best, but still F.I.N.E. fine
Any George Winston is good stuff. Some releases tho, are better than others. While "Plains" is very good, it doesn't effect me like 1982's "December" or 1994's "Forest". As for the individual songs... there is no "Carol Of The Bells", "Thanksgiving" (both from "December"), "Tramarack Pines" or "Cloudy This Morning" (both from "Forest") here. There are however some classic Winston-esque tracks here. Check out "Rainsong", "Cloudburst", "Before Barbed Wire". While Winston is able to pick and choose his 'cover' tunes, I feel his choices on "Plains" could have been better. Sarah McLachlan's "Angel" just doesn't work for me here. Winston plays the Cahn & Atkins tunes well, but his own new age stuff is easily the best. Track 9 ("Merry Go Round") should have been deleted. The majority of this album flows - and depending on where you are... it will give you the opportunity to experience some of those deep thoughts.
