Picoult scores again!
Jodi Picoult is an author who just keeps getting better. This novel, set in Pennyslvania's Amish country, is both an edge-of-your-seat thriller and an up-close glimpse of the "quiet people" and how they choose to live or - for that matter - to defect from their rigorous rituals. When a young Amish woman is accused of killing her newborn, she steadfastly denies it. But if she didn't, who did? And why? A very confused and cosmopolitan attorney grapples with that question as the court permits the young woman bail on the condition that the barrister live with her and her family - sans the conveniences of modern life. In a nifty sub-plot, the lawyer finds an old love intruding on a new one. There are many love stories here - for a way of life, for family, for lover, for baby. And the suspense builds from chapter to chapter although this is far from just a haunting mystery. You may guess who donnit, but the lyrical writing and the even-handed insight into another culture makes it well worth the read. And you will care about the clearly defined characters as each wrestles with his/her personal demons.

Another Winner from Picoult
The discovery of a dead infant would be horrifying in any circumstances, but when you throw in the fact that this infant was found in an Amish farmer's barn and you throw in the fact that the infant's apparent mother is an eighteen year old unmarried Amish girl, it turns positively gruesome. Although Katie denies any involvement with the infant, including she may have given birth to it, circumstantial evidence leads to her arrest. Enter Ellie Hathaway, fresh from a courtroom victory and sickened by the "wheels of justice", Ellie leaps at the chance to visit her great-aunt's home in Paradise, PA. What she doesn't count on is getting involved with another courtroom battle so soon, but at the pleading of her aunt, she takes on the case of Katie Fisher. Ellie soon learns that trying to find out the truth from these 'plain' folks is more trying than expected. She immerses herself into Katie's world and understands more and more what it means to be 'plain'. As this story reaches the heart wrenching finale, one will be reminded of another book, the endings are similar, but this truly stands on its own as a powerful reminder of life, faith, and love.

This is the first book that I read from this author
I thought this book was great.

It was a great story with layers and layers of interesting facts, intertwined with the complex story line.

Katie who is an 18 year old Amish girl has a baby out of wedlock
and can't remember what happens next after giving birth. She passes out, and the baby appears suffocated. She doesn't rememeber the birth or how the baby died.

The DA wants to prosecute her for murder. Her lawyer gets "custody" of her and has to live in her home to keep an eye on her so that she doesn't skip bail. The lawyer, Ellie learns of the Amish ways.

This story goes into great detail of the Amish ways and also the trial reads likes you could be a juror and you are making the judgement against Katie. The medical terms are alittle hard to understand or pronounce the words, but the author then
describes them so you can understand them.

I totally recommend this book to everyone. I really reads very quickly and it makes you think.
