Customer Reviews of Pioneer Deh-P5500Mp Single Play Compact Disc (PIONEER DEHP5500MP)
bought 1 for my husband who drives over the road trucks my husband complained he needed better options for music choices while driving we purchased one and put it in his rig now he doesn't complain about going across texas trying to find radio stations .going from east coast to the west coast. no complaint now a happy truck driver and a safe one also.
Great car head unit with MP3 and WMA support
I'll admit that I'm not an audio expert of any kind. But the P5500MP worked out great for my needs.
I have another pioneer unit that is about 6 years old, and it has worked great the entire time that I have had it. So I decided to stick with pioneer brand again.
The P5500MP was very easy to install, even for someone who has never installed a car stereo before. Just clip a few wires, and clamp the new ones together. Don't pay someone to do it when you can do it in an hour or two. It comes with a decent manual and installation guide.
The P5500MP supports CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3, WMA, FM, AM, and is XM satellite radio ready. It has a built in amplifier, comes with a remote control, a detachable face plate, and a bunch of built in and programable equalizer settings. The sound is excellent. Using the built in equalizer and amplifier, I was able to produce much cleaner sound from the same set of speakers compared to the old pioneer unit. You can also program in the names of up to 48 of your CDs.
I'm sure everyone is interested in the MP3 capabilities. The MP3 function has worked great for me so far. No problems. It will display ID3 tags, folder names, file names, comments, etc... Folder and file navigation is very simple.
MP3 was the main reason I upgraded to a new car stereo, and it was worth it. No longer do I need to keep a huge case of CDs with me. I can fit 10 or 15 CDs on one CD-R now. The unit also plays WMA, which I never use, but I guess maybe some computer newbies/microsoft clones do. The compressed audio capability would be great for long road trips, listening to long audio books (Lord of the Rings), or just compiling a CD with 10-15 hours of your favorite music. I travel an hour to school each way, so a regular CD just doesn't cut it for me anymore.
It will play a great variety of encoded MP3s:
. Constant Bit Rate (CBR) and Variable Bit Rate (VBR).
. ID3 Tag version 1.0 and 1.1
. Sampling frequencies of 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, 48kHz
. Bit rates from 8 to 320 kbps
. CDs recorded in ISO9660 levels 1 & 2,
. Extended formats of Joilet and Romeo
The display is very nice. It has a variety of colors, but is not distracting. It is very clear and easy to read. The display is one of the reasons that I paid a little more and got the 5500MP instead of the 4500MP, which has a plain, blue display.
My only complaint is the detachable face. Compared to my old pioneer unit, this face on this one is a little trickier to attach. I will probably get used to it after I play with it for a while though.
It also doesn't support winamp .m3u play lists. I don't use them anyway, so I don't care.
The satellite radio ready feature might be misleading to some people. This means that the unit can control a satellite receiver (sold separately), not that one is built in.
There are many, many options that can be set in the unit such as having the display dim when the sun goes down (activated by turning on your headlights), and having the mute come on automatically when a cell phone call comes in. This is one of the best products I have seen in a long time. It was worth waiting for MP3 support to become available and cheap
