The Avent iQ24 Electronic Steam Sterilizer is so named because the makers consider it an "intelligent" product, using "advanced iQ technology." And it really is pretty smart. The machine communicates each phase of the sterilization cycle, so you never have to guess whether the bottles or breast pump accessories are actually sterile yet. A digital display, electronic countdown, and sound alerts give parents the assurance that baby will not be contaminated with the bacteria that lurk in unclean feeding equipment. Another cool feature is the ability to "pause" the cycle (again, read the instructions to do this properly!) in order to remove some items without interrupting the cycle.
Putting the Sterilizer Together
Although the iQ24 Sterilizer is relatively easy to assemble and use, its not necessarily intuitive. In other words, youre probably going to have to read the instruction manual pretty carefully the first time around. After that, it should be a piece of cake. Basically, there is a pot with power cord, a lower basket, a bottle rack, an upper basket (plus a spare upper basket), a lid, measuring cup, and tongs. Two 9-ounce bottles are included, as well, along with nipples, screw rings, and dome caps. The baskets and bottle rack slide onto a central stem, and the bottles and breast pump components are placed in the appropriate baskets or rack. The sterilizer cleverly uses bottle screw rings to separate the baskets and bottle rack, putting the very items to be sterilized to good secondary use! Once the correct amount of water is added and all parts are assembled and loaded (and thats the hardest part, figuring out which basket and bottle parts go where), simply plug the sterilizer body into an electrical outlet, select mode one or two (for six-hour or 24-hour sterilization cycles), and wait six minutes (for either mode). Youll also need to study the information pamphlet for a translation of the various beeps and flashing lights on the display, but generally it will be obvious when the sterilization cycle has begun and ended, and what to do next (feed that baby!).
Dishwasher Basket
As a bonus feature, two baskets can be clipped together to hold small items such as nipples, breast pump parts, pacifiers, etc., for washing in the top rack of your dishwasher prior to sterilization. Keep in mind that Avent items may discolor over time if they are washed in the dishwasher with dirty dishes covered with remnants of strong sauces, such as tomato or curry sauce.
Note: Sterilization is not the same as, nor should it replace, washing! All bottles and breast pump supplies should be washed carefully in mild, soapy water, and rinsed, before sterilizing. Also, for optimal effectiveness of the sterilizer, and to reduce limescale build-up, use distilled water for sterilizing. Regardless of whether you use tap or distilled water, you should de-scale the sterilizer every four weeks or so (read manual for instructions).--Emilie Coulter

Customer Reviews of Philips Avent iQ24 Sterilizer
NO REGRETS! Worth it!! I was advised by several moms (including my own mother when she found out I spent $90 on a sterilizer!) not to buy a sterilizer, that bottles only truly need to be sterilized before the first time they are used so it's just an unnecessary hassle and expense. This is true in the U.S. (not all countries have a monitored water supply) according to our doctor, provided you have a perfectly healthy child. I was also worried about my twins getting allergies if they aren't exposed to any germs if we're constantly sterilizing everything. I bought it anyways before my twins were born and I do NOT regret buying this item!! My son has very severe acid reflux and a sensitive tummy and his doctor recommended sterilizing the bottles between every use. This has become a life saver!! We use it several times a day, every day, so we've definitely gotten our money out of it!! With twins that were fed expressed breast milk AND formula in two different bottles each feeding (X 2 babies = 4 bottles PER FEEDING), we were going through TONS of bottles every day! We rarely use the caps on our bottles, so instead of putting caps on the top rack, we put 6 more 4oz bottles, for a total of 12 bottles each time. WOW, no other sterilizer will hold that many! My time is extremely valuable with twin infants, so I really appreciate the fact that it takes 2 minutes to load. Very simple to use! I also loved the fact that my Medella breast pump parts fit well on the top shelf. We put toys, pacifiers, sippy cups, baby spoons, medicine dispensers, etc. in this thing! We've been using it for 7 months now and it's still working great for us. I do not use distilled water like many have mentioned, just filtered water and have never had any problems, but I guess it would depend on your water supply where you're at. This is a much safer alternative to cleaning products!
Wish we'd purchased it sooner
This sterilizer is very easy to use and saves us a considerable amount of time. We were initially hesitant about purchasing it because of the price and because we felt that it would be the same amount of work as using a pot of boiling water. However, I got to try out the sterilizer at a relative's home while on vacation and found that it really made life much simpler - no more waiting for water to boil and then waiting 5-10 minutes to remove all the bottles from the pot. With this, you just pour some water - we use distilled water as suggested in a couple of other Amazon.com reviews - place the bottles and such neatly in the racks, and then literally, we set it and forget it.
Quick and Easy to Sterilize 6 Bottles at Once
I purchased the Avent iQ24 sterilizer after reading the reviews on this website and am very pleased with it. It provides a quick and easy way to sterilize up to 6 bottles and nipples at one time. I also like that it can be programmed to re-sterilize for up to 24 hours.

>The only thing that is difficult to get to are the bottom two neck rings when the sterilizer is fully loaded. However, we just put the neck rings on the top rack instead.
