Customer Reviews of Perspective
Inspiration to the Core. This is Becker's most personal album. It was composed from his wheelchair after he was tragically stricken with ALS and given months to count from his doctors. Overall, this is NOT what one would expect from an 80's shred-guitar-god like Becker. Those looking for merciless SHRED should turn to Becker's album Perpetual Burn.
The music on Perspective is refreshingly diverse, including tribal rhythms (primal), intelligent orchestrations (tracks 3,6,8), oriental melodies a la Friedman (empire), a beautiful a-capella song (higher), and some bluesy jams (blue, meet me).
The highlight of the disc is undoubtedly The End of The Beginning. The classical-sounding theme, which seems influenced by Haydn or Mozart, is introduced by a single piano. The melody is fleshed out with a soaring lead guitar accompanied by the orchestral string section. Then, at around 5:30, the music crashes to a halt, much like Becker's career when he became paralyzed in 1990. After melancholy variations of the melody, the theme returns, more triumphant than ever. This re-emergence of the melody perhaps symbolizes Becker's spirit to stay alive, despite what doctors may tell him.
In an age of manufactured hype and shallow music, Jason Becker's story cries out to be heard, and so does this music. This music is the fruit of passion, not of corporate contract. Ludwig van Beethoven went deaf and went on to compose his finest works. Becker is no Beethoven, but shares similarity to the great composer in one respect: despite being severely handicapped, he writes music to touch the heart and inspire the mind. ~patrick bollig
A TREMENDOUSLY FANTASTIC RECORD!!
First of all "THIS IS NOT A SHRED RECORD"!!
Don't expect any lightening fast solos on this record therefore
if you are a shredhead which ONLY like to listen fast solos be aware of this record. However if you're a MUSIC lover then Perspective will definitely please your ears.I'm not going to mention Jason Becker's story cos it's nothing to do with the record,I'm sure that Jason didn't need you to buy Perspective because of sympathy but for your apprecciation.Perspective is no doubt one of the GREATEST record of all time,It's a very varied album which have as much music elements as you can think of like
African/Tribal percussions on Primal, that beautiful guitar concerto End of the Beginning, the Eastern influenced Empire,a bluesy rework of Bob Dylan's Meet me in the Morning...etc.Check this great record out,I can't think of any reason to diss this record off!!
Not a Shred CD or even close.
I have to say that this CD was a little disappointing. I have been a fan for years and I have most of Jason Becker's CD's. Speed Metal Symphony (1987) and Go Off! (1988), both with Marty Friedman (Cacophony). I have Jason's first solo, Perpetual Burn (1988) and A little Ain't Enough (1991) with David Lee Roth. All of the above CD's are excellent. Perspective (1996) was written by Jason Becker. Since Jason was losing the ability to play because of (ALS), he was unable to play most of the songs except a few of the slower ones. He had guest performers play most of the music. I like Jason Becker because he could shred like no other. His guest performers did not ever try to play a great guitar. I would pass on this CD unless you are an absolute Jason Becker fan.
