Customer Reviews of Penthouse
A Great Band Luna are a quiet, Velvet Underground inspired rock band. Penthouse is one of their best CDs, featuring low key, quiet vocals, oddball guitars with lots of unexpected twists, and sweet, lovestruck lyrics. There is a lot of talent in Luna's vault, especially when it comes to songwriting. They have a lot of promise and are sure to be huge someday soon. Penthouse is my second favorite of all of their stuff, behind Days Of Out Nights, mainly because of the weird lyrics. They really don't make a lot of sense, but who says that's a bad thing. It is one of the most unique aspects of this band. If you're looking for a first CD to buy from Luna, I'd say buy this, it's a great record that not a lot of people have checked out yet. My favorite songs include 23 Minutes In Brussels and Sideshow By The Seashore. It could be called lo fi, it could be called art punk, but I think rock is a good phrase to describe every corner of their very original style.
Luna peaks with Penthouse
One can't help but imagine that Dean Wareham sang this whole album with a wink.
The first time I listened to Penthouse, I found myself a captive listener. It made me want to sink back into a recliner, close my eyes and imagine I was somewhere else...somewhere in a train station at rush hour....no, somewhere in the city at midnight watching Luna perform while strange beings milled around with their funky clothes and hairdo's in tow....
Though it's true, some of the tracks sound reminiscent of the Velvet Underground's, there's nothing sour or embittered about Penthouse. There's plenty of full-textured bass; the lyrics are charmingly wry, and the guitar playing is smooth and faultless.
Simply stated, Penthouse is quirky, mellow pop music filled with infectious tunes.
Highlights: Lost In Space, Sideshow By the Seashore, Chinatown, Double Feature
Drawbacks: Luna seemingly loses direction with the last 4 songs (+ hidden track no.11), 23 Minutes in Brussels is 3 minutes too long
Nocturnal Urban Ambience
The cover of the album pretty much captures the essence of the music. A low angle b/w shot of the building with two floors mysteriously illuminating intense light. Muted disjointedness and flushes of sedateness all packaged visually for our eyes and, thus, beautifully recorded within these 11 songs for our ears. Dean and his cohorts were/are trying to capture the after-hour, "that tiny, tiny hour" of urban ambience, a dream-like, hazy state of mind. Wandering in the streets amidst the iron grid, concrete pavement, going and curving the streets in a prolonged trance. The cover shot and 2 other photos on the CD all evoke this nocturne.
Lead by Wareham's observations of urban life, supplanted by rockin' smoothin' guitar work and seamless production, this album grows on you and somehow never gives its complete impact in any 1 listening. It's so good and subtle, the effects are not that clear-cut but yet the music pulls you into its pensive mood.
A pleasant stop for my nocturnal ears.
