Customer Reviews of Pee-wee's Playhouse Vol. 13
Fun, laughs, comedy, satire, and that titillating Tito! OK, OK, this show is a guilty pleasure of mine! This former 80s teen never watched the Playhouse when it was on originally, thinking it would be a "baby show" on the order of Mister Rogers. Like the Guy with the Gray Suit and Bow-Tie himself said, "Oh. Ha, ha,ha! My mistake!"
After reading about the appeal the show had to all ages and that 1/3 of the fans of this "kiddie show" were 18+, I had to check it out. So I did, when the repeats were aired. (I was THIRTY YEARS OLD by then!) LOOK WHAT I WAS MISSING! The sets, the wonderfully wacky characters (puppet and human), the music, and Pee-Wee's (really Paul Reubens') wacky brand of frenetic, Jim Carrey-esque comedy. Also, there are some "adult" satirical references that single-digit age-groupers just won't get. Mister Rogers and his neighborhood, this ain't!
Though the show was aways wackily, entertainingly excellent, it did kind of jump the shark with the departure of Tito, the melt-your-heart-handsome lifeguard at the Playhouse Pool. This strapping, swarthy-skinned, scantily-clad "suavecito" (Spanish slang for a good-looking guy)was absolutely my favorite human supporting character on the show (Cowboy Curtis, my eyelash!) and (OK, I admit it!) one of the reasons I watched the show! His replacement, Ricardo the soccer player (did they even have a soccer field on the Playhouse grounds? The Playhouse had a pool, so a lifeguard made more sense) was cute and charming in his own way, but next to Tito? Come on! Ricardo wasn't fit to rub suntan oil on Tito's "cuerpo." (That's Spanish for "body," and the T-Man's was DANG fine!)
So, I give the Playhouse 5 stars for humor, satire, fun, and that tantalizing, titillating, "muy bonito" Tito!
