Customer Reviews of Pee Wee Herman Show
Silly fun I have watched this video many times over the past 10 years and the silliness still holds up. This origianl show first broadcast on HBO around 1991 is original and worth a watch. It is unfortunate that it is only available on VHS, DVD would do the production far more justice.
the best entertainment ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a hudge fan of Pee-wee. I think that he is funny in many ways performing in front of an "adult" audience. I like the part when Joan comes on stage and Dr. Mongo hypnotyses her and makes her take off her dress!!!!!!
It was very hard to belive that Pee-wee went from "late-night stage-show" to "movie superstar" to "Saturday-morning kids t.v. show" then he sneaked in to a XXX-rated Sarasota movie thearter and "masturbated" and got arrested!!!!! That practiclly killed his whole carrer. But he's already started work on 2 new Pee-wee movies!!!!! Keep it up Pee-wee!!!!!!
Before the Typecast....
This performance by Paul Reubens, (AKA: Pee-Wee Herman) showed his best skill: adult comedy performance. Then, as a mere stage actor still trying to break into the 'biz, Paul Reubens arranged the zaniest cast around to attempt to re-create a mockup version of the stereotypical 1950's "Howdy-Doody" style kid's TV show... with one sneaky twist... it's evil! Not the Tim Burton or Danny-Elfman type of evil with maniacal clowns. This was Paul Reuben's attempt to show the world what a crock the veil of innocence in the 50's really was, and at the same time, have some major laughs in the process. Everything from mirrors on the shoes in hopes of looking up that pretty girl's dress to corrupt postal workers vandalizing parcels. If you think this type of humor is out of line, just remember that a decade later, the same type of humor was applied to an animated character named Bart Simpson.
This show was and is not intended for children. I personally think Paul's worst move was to try and apply a watered-down version of this show on Saturday mornings in the form of Pee Wee's Playhouse. Even though his major success came from that show and brought about an audience of all ages, it did one fatal thing to Paul's career; it typecast him into the genre of children's programming, and once you've done that to yourself, especially if you're a guy like Paul, you can never leave untarnished. It's safe to say that if he had not typecast himself, recent incidences would have been overlooked. Not to say Paul didn't try and sneak in some very subliminal adult jokes into PWP in later years. The show is full of them if you know what to look for. However, if you want to taste the full girth of Reuben's zany and twisted cranium, check this out. It's his purest. Or rather, should I say... not. ;)
One more thing. IF you're a fan of PWP, you'll be happy to learn that a few of the characters followed Pee Wee along from this show. Jambi the Genie (who's sarcastic form of humor and wit always mixed well with having magical abilities), Miss Yyvone -- the "innocent" girl next door, Capt. Karl. -- the grungy old sea captain who in this show had an interesting relationship with Miss Yyvone.. (something which was omitted from PWP.), and even the infamous foil ball. Cowboy Curtis (Laurence Fishburne) and Reba the Mail Lady, sadly, were not in this video.
This is definately one to check out. The only reason I give it a 4.. it was the start of his career and of course quality of acting and such small tidbits are always in room of improvement. Other than that, it's a cult classic.
