Customer Reviews of Paul Simon - You're the One (In Concert from Paris)
Paul's The One I Saw Paul Simon during this tour, this performance is from October of 2000, I saw him in mid-December when he played the Beacon Theater in NYC.
This was the best concert I've ever been to, and I go to many concerts.
The DVD covers basically the same songs that he sang at the performance I went to.
I really enjoyed this concert, his energy levels are high and he really seems to be having more fun here than in his 2 Central Park concerts.
This concert really captures his love of music and the amount of effort he puts into performing live.
The only flaw is that the sound quality could have been much better, it sounds too hollow, and doesn't really capture the full volume of his band.
Faithful to what took place
I was at the Olympia theatre for the second concert : 6th row, great view, walked out happy. The man was probably thoroughly concentrated for the shooting, hence very little interaction with the audience, except for some US fans on center front row. But the music itself, along with the playing of those top-notch musicians and the way this little man can perform his lyrics (watch 'Darling Lorraine') made this concert one of the very best I've ever seen.
This DVD has got it all: great picture, excellent sound and is very true to what happened in the hall: the intimate performance of a discrete artist playing his very polished music.
Of course, if you don't like Paul Simon's recent musical inclinations, you won't like this concert as even the old standard are re-arranged into this unique American/African blend. But if you don't mind opening your ears for something new you might like, buy this DVD and there is NO way you can't be disappointed!
Great songs!
This concert has a very well balanced setlist with songs from all the different periods of Paul Simon's carreer. But be careful: do not expect a great production like "The Concert In The Park" with thousands of people watching. This is an intimate show and throughout the concert Paul behaves as if he's rejoining old friends. Many times he goes to the first rows of the audience and shake hands with people, showing how he is simple and humble.
A great feature of this musical DVD, is the subtitles with lyrics to all songs. This is especially valuable for all of you to whom english is not the mother language.
The only reason for not giving 5 stars is the awful versions of "Kodachrome" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water". For me, there's no problem about making different versions of a song, if they change the song for better. However, in my opinion, not only these two songs are almost unrecognizable (except for the lyrics) but also they do not sound half as good as the original ones or the live versions from Paul Simon's "The Concert In The Park". Of course those die-hard fans of Paul Simon will always find that most of the songs had already better versions recorded but overall I think they always sound good.
In conclusion, those who like the solo career of Paul Simon will like this concert. Those who prefer the Simon & Garfunkel duo might feel a little disappointed and miss "Mrs. Robinson" or "Sounds Of Silence". However, the open minded might feel surprised by the quality of his solo songs, particulary "Graceland", "Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes", "You Can Call Me Al" and "Darling Lorraine".
