Well worth a try...
While Panzer Commander may have a few problems, it is a must for any World War II tank enthusiast. Campaign scenarios are limted to: 1 British, 1 U.S., 3 Soviet, and 3 German -- and 'probably' 15 different armored vehicles to choose from. Single mission play offers the most diverse mission selection. Graphics are...okay...but not spectacular with a Voodoo 3000/650 Athlon. No tracer is offered to spot outgoing shell trajectories; a minus for both historical and gunner accuracy. Explosions are dismal, and "floating" terrain/enemy tanks/anti-tank positions certainly offer NO advantage. These problems aren't a laughing matter when caught in a hot corner and WILL cost you your three month career in campaign play. (Patches should have taken care of this but failed to do so in my case.) And unlike Logitec's tank sims, there are no enemy infantry--none. However: This sim offers many good points. For those who LOVE World War II armor, this IS a tank sim and models are 'pretty' accurate or authentic. So much so you will find very quickly why the Allied Tank corps had disasterous casualty figures. But it is very rewarding when you outflank and destroy a German Panther or Tiger in the Ardennes. But this is rare indeed. When stationed in the turret of a Sherman, you will usually end up toast, no matter what you do -- or just like the real thing. (You have absolutely NO chance when fighting Tigers in the flat terrain of North Africa.) But never fear -- when discouraged you can slaughter T-34's on the Eastern Front in a King Tiger. All in all, the game is a little outdated but CHALLENGING and "Well worth a try..." if you are -- at the very least -- interested in World War II armor action. I tried it and I'm glad I did. SSI's next one should be a doosy.
Fascinating, enaging simulation, atrocious customer service
It is a shame that such a fascinating and often captivating simulation is undermined by the lack of customer service. It is one thing to have to download patches (this is to be expected as problems arise in a Windows-platform environment). But it is entirely another not to receive any response when contacting both the technical support and customer service departments of the manufacturer. Generally solid software is apparently supposed to make up for a complete absence of support and simple courtesy. But it does not.
