Customer Reviews of Pangai Noon Karate Vol 5 (Tsunami)
Makes you wonder! Makes you wonder how a relatively inexperienced Goju Ryu person would feel qualified to criticize a senior expoonent of a completely different style that he has no knowledge of. Rather like asking a plumber to diagnose a heart ailment.
Shinyu Gushi was a student of Saburo Uehara, long considered the premier student of the style's founder, Kanbun Uechi. The video is beautifully produced, full of useful information, and obviously beyond the comprehension of the average plumber!
Not worth the cost
Although I have a lot of respect for Gushi Sensei's lineage, knowledge, and ability, I did not find the video worth the cost. It is short in duration and frankly did not contain very much information in my opinion. There are many conditioning exercises and methods in Okinawan Karate that are very beneficial, this tape just not include very many of them. With excitement I put the tape into my VCR and set back to enjoy a learning experience. At the conclusion of the tape I felt like I was short changed... As I stated, Gushi Sensei is a talented teacher and practitioner, but this tape certainly did not do him justice.
The real deal!
If you're into "traditional" , by which I mean pre-WWII karate, you will love this video and get a lot from it. Beautifully filmed in the Suiho En Dojo and garden in Los Angeles (recent recipient of a Congressional Award) it features methods and techniques of body hardening and conditioning that were in danger of being lost until this video was made.
Shinyu Gushi, now in his sixties, is a living example of the the effectiveness of his training methods. With a physique that would be the envy of a man in his mid twenties, he is able to destroy planks of wood with the tip of his big toe, 4 x 2s with his wrist, and an opponent's throat with his finger tips.
But this is not simply a demonstration video. All the exercises, strength development work, techniques and drills are shown in detail. It covers a great deal of ground but does it thoroughly and with a lot of class. One of my favorites, a great teacher and a superb video!
