A casual observer might be forgiven for thinking that the rate of change in personal computer technology has slowed during the past year or so. Not true. While there haven't been any giant shifts in processors, hard drives, or PC memory lately, the slack has more than been taken up by advances in hand-held digital assistants, digital cameras, and graphics devices. Changes in the connectivity between "mother ship" machines and smaller devices (think FireWire, Bluetooth, and wireless LANs) also have taken place. PC Advisor aims to keep its readers abreast of the latest developments in PC and PC-related technologies so that they're better able to make wise buying decisions. It does a fine job of surveying the offerings from major manufacturers, emphasizing models available in the United Kingdom. Reviews are mainly qualitative, though: you may wish for more quantitative benchmarks in reviews of graphics cards, for example.

The editors of PC Advisor recognize that there's a heap of information on the Internet for buyers, and that a magazine has to provide more than product comparisons. Indeed, this publication features a number of how-to articles and some problem-solving guides in which experts respond to reader queries. The magazine also does a good job of calling attention to useful online resources, and ships with a CD or DVD containing software (some complete, some shareware, and some demo-only). PC Advisor subscriptions are priced for companies that need to make PC buying decisions throughout the year; you'd probably just buy an edition or two if you were preparing to make a personal purchase. --David Wall
