Ozzy at Budokan
I bought this DVD largely because of the cheap price. I got my money's worth, but not by much. I saw Ozzy a few times years ago and I was shocked to see him in this DVD. The energy is gone man. He pokes around the stage like an old George Carlin in this concert. At times I found myself waiting for him to just fall over while screaming "I've fallen and can't get up". Another shock came when the camera showed the stage from the rear, projecting out towards the audience. Through this viewpoint, you can clearly see a teleprompter with the lyrics scrolling along with the song at the foot of the stage in front of him (it certainly wasn't the set list, that is also clearly visible in paper form at his feet). Is Ozzy so senile or brain fried that he can't remember his own lyrics - even during a tour where he sings the same songs night after night? Sure enough, there are many times in the DVD where you can clearly see him reading the lyrics off the teleprompter. That is just pitiful! Further, if I had a nickel every time he screams "Go F***ing wild", or some such derivative, I'd be a rich man. That seems to be all he can do to get a crowd rolling - other than dousing himself and others (i.e. the cameramen) with water every five minutes. Again, pitiful! He also mouths the lyrics to obviously pre-recorded segments in certain sections as though to fool the audience that it is really him speaking in real time. Give me a break!

>Another reviewer commented on Zakk's idiosyncratic playing so I'll also comment on this as well. Zakk seems intent on filling every 32nd note worth of space with pinch harmonics (guitar squeals). As a guitar player myself, I know that these are fun to do, but he goes way overboard here. He never lets the music breathe so that the groove speaks - not for a single second. It is just one pinch harmonic after the next in rapid fire order. Occasional use of this technique can really spark up solos and fills but it is just distracting here. Randy was likely rolling over in his grave during Believer - a riff which is really cool when played with enough space to create some critical dynamics. Here the riff is barely recognizable as it is trounced by a million squeals. And the spitting as pointed out in another review is also rather gross - especially when Zakk spits straight up over his head, ultimately covering himself in his own spit. That is just downright disturbing. This might be the source of Ozzy continually soaking himself with water through the show - he is really bathing off Zakk's spit - it sure beats the explaination that he thinks such an action will get the crowd going.

>So, if you really want to see Ozzy walking around like he needs a walker while reading his own lyrics off a teleprompter, Zakk spitting all over himself, the front row, the camera man, his amps, etc., while making every note sound like a Smurf being stepped on, then buy the DVD. Otherwise, grab an older performance or just listen to the classic CDs.
