One of the strongest storylines is the ongoing romance between murderer Keller (Christopher Meloni, Law & Order: SVU and Beecher (Lee Tergesen), who's hoping to be paroled. Series creator Tom Fontana doesn't allow their arc to be diluted by any idealistic expectations. The viewer is acutely aware that Beecher is an easy target for annihilation whether or not he is released from prison. The viewer is never quite as certain of Keller's motives--whether they're borne of love and affection, or a selfish need to satisfy his own primal urges. Like Beecher, Alvarez (Kirk Acevedo) is trying to keep his own nose clean in the hopes that he'll be eligible for parole three years down the line. It's easy to understand the almost suffocating feeling he lives every day, knowing that three years may as well be a lifetime when you're behind bars and the target of both your former gang and the Aryan brothers, led by Schillinger (J.K. Simmons, Law & Order: SVU, the Spider-Man films). And Ryan (Dean Winters) desperately tries to save his mentally retarded brother Cyril (played by Dean's real-life sibling Scott William Winters) from being executed.
There are a few subplots that don't ring true, such as the quasi romance between a librarian (Patti LuPone) and one of the prisoners, and an elderly inmate's (Joey Grey) implausible death wish. And for all the constraints the majority of convicts face, some appear to have almost free run of the prison. Still, Fontana has created a vivid, dark world where the occasional acts of humanity are as important as the non-stop chaos that is Oz. While it certainly helps to have seen the previous five seasons of the series to enjoy this season, it's not mandatory. These last eight episodes work fine as a stand-alone piece of drama. --Jae-Ha Kim

Customer Reviews of Oz - The Complete Sixth Season
The End Of An Addictive Drama After 56 or so hours, this dark drama comes to an end. Many of these characters are seared into my brain and as real to me as people I know in real life. Although a few of them remain standing at the season's finale, many of these characters meet their deaths, usually of course at the hand of another prisoner or sometimes a CO. Some of the deaths will make you sad (without giving away the plot); others can only be described as the result of poetic justice. (i.e., the event that occurs during the prisoners' performance of "Macbeth.") The writer and director have created real human beings, people who bleed when shanked. The best characters, Sister Pete included, are not perfect; and almost every prisoner, regardless of how close he is to an animal, has a modicum of goodness inside himself. <

>OZ stands for the proposition that prisons in America are used to warehouse undesirables rather than rehabilitate them, something that critics of our penal system have been saying for years. Not one of the few prisoners who ever leave Oz alive (with the possible exception of Beecher) is a better person, having served time there. They usually return almost as quickly as they leave. There are certainly threads of hope, however. After his death, Augustus' memoir is published to rave critical reviews; and in a confrontation between Beecher and Schillinger, Beecher, although he has done many bad things during his time at Oz, distinguishes himself from Schillinger by affirming that "every life is precious," a concept foreign to the avowed Aryan. <

This series was awesome!!!
I just became hooked on this show after the first episode of the first season. I'm glad that I didn't watch this while it was on HBO the first time, it would have driven me crazy. Renting a whole season at a time was so much better. Waiting for the next weeks episode would have been horrible. All of the cast were great and the stories kept you tuned in till the very last minute. The ending was dramatic and surprising, but sad because it had to end. This is something I will watch over again.
