Customer Reviews of Over the Edge
Ooooh Child...Things are Gonna Get Easier... Over The Edge, the story of a suburban town filled with teenaged kids with nothing to do. They have the "Rec Center", but that is conveniently closed when Carl's father attempts to close a real estate deal with some bigwig Texans. Instead of trying to understand exactly why the kids in New Grenada are a bunch of little dirtbag druggies, most of the parents and teachers of the town write the kids off as troubled youth. The only person in the movie who does seem to understand the kids is the counselor at the Rec Center, but she is misunderstood as well when a COP finds hash in one of the kid's pockets during a bust. Over The Edge has a great cast of actors, including Matt Dillion. This was Matt's very first movie! There is something for everyone in Over the Edge...romance (Carl and the Redhead), party scenes, action scenes (a mugging in the park, the riot at the end, etc.), and a rockin' soundtrack to boot!! You'll get that groovy feeling ya had in the 70's all over again.
Great 70's Movie
I too first saw this film in the early 80's on HBO. I was in junior high school at the time--the same age as the teenagers depicted in the movie. Hence, I could relate to many of its themes (i.e. bell bottoms, freaks, skateboards and teen parties). This film is a very accurate portrayal of troubled suburban teens and the problems that arise when they are ignored by adults. Matt Dillon gives an awesome performance in what I believe is one of his first major roles. In addition, on a nostalgic note, the soundtrack to this film includes classic 70's songs from Cheap Trick, Van Halen, The Ramones and the Cars. These songs certainly capture the essence of the time (the late 70's). Eventually, I hope this movie gets released on DVD. It's a classic in my opinion.
Get this film on DVD, it's been 25 years!!!
This film, about surburban teenage angst and boredom, starring a very young Matt Dillon, became an early 80s cult classic. The plot is one most hits close to home with a lot of teenagers. A lot of Gen Xers remember this movie very well, and Kurt Cobain had mentioned it as being one of his all-time favorite films. I honestly believe that this film has an impact on the alternative rock explosion in the 90s... I think that there are some scenes that might be preventing it from rerelease in the post-Columbine environment (scenes of kids with guns), but I think the director did well with what was a low-budget film (with a killer soundtrack of its time) and isn't too preachy overall. Please flood Matt Dillon and Jonathan Kaplan's mail with trying to get this lost classic out there again. I think the hurdle might be the music itself (Hendrix, Van Halen, Cheap Trick) and getting it cleared. Hopefully this can change with some influence from fans and possibly a few famous names that are fans of the film.
