In the Bochco tradition, individual episodes juggle several storylines that can take an entire season to play out, frequently in unexpected ways. The wounding of a young private named Bo Rider (Josh Henderson) in the series pilot leads to a protracted story of personal valor back home and a showdown with a monstrous father. The embedding of a television journalist with the major characters touches on media spin in the modern age, as well as the phenomenon of hostage-taking in Iraq. The training of more-or-less hapless Iraqi security forces to take over for the Americans does not inspire confidence that the U.S. can get out anytime soon. Issues of infidelity, loneliness, female soldiers in battle, the incompetence of some commanding officers, conflicts between supposed comrades-in-arms, and much else bring a gritty honesty to the show. But it's the striking visuals that take one's breath away: the disorienting perspective from within a truck that's just been shelled, the strange look of a firefight waged almost eyeball-to-eyeball between enemies, with neither side ducking for cover. There's never been an American television show based on a war currently being waged, and Over There certainly makes one realize how much survival in Iraq is an end in itself, far away from ongoing debates about the war's justification. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews of Over There (13 Episodes)
So sad it's cancelled... I watched every episode of this show. My boyfriend at the time was a Marine deployed to Iraq. It helped a lot to see, even if it was a dramatization and probably somewhat "hollywood", what was going on over there. Anyone who has loved ones in the Middle East will really connect with this show. Unfortunately, I've heard and read opinions from actual Marines and soldiers who didn't care for the show. They are very picky (and rightfully so) that if a movie or show depicting our military is not totally accurate, they usually won't like it. <

>The characters are so well developed and get better with every episode, and the actors playing them are incredible. This show will keep you interested from the first episode to the untimely last. The series does end abruptly. Obviously, the last episode was written with the intention of a follow-up season and has your usual season finale cliffhanger. <

>I am disappointed this show was cancelled. I understand it was due to bad ratings (wrong station? HBO might have been better) coupled with the high cost of production, but I've heard rumors there are plans to bring it back. We'll see.
Over There
This is the most realistic show of the Iraq war that I have ever seen. I was there in OIF III and this brought back good and sad memories. It is right on the money. All I wish is that there was a second season
Over there
This series really hit home with me, my boyfriend is in the Army and when this was on tv he was just out of basic training. We all knew it was more than possible that he was going to go "over there" and it was just a great dipiction of the real thing. He is there now and even though I don't live on a base some of the things are about the same. So i would recommend anyone who has any tie to the military get this just to see how it could be or will be. And I also recommend this for anyone who doesn't have any tie to the military to know what real Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force, and any other type of military goes through so we all can be FREE and keep the freedom here!
