Customer Reviews of Outer Limits: Wolf 359 / TV Show
Creepy I saw this episode as a little kid and it has always stuck in
my mind. Later, after reading Theodore's Sturgeon's story, "Microcosmic God," I saw some similarities. Like Sturgeon's story, scientists create a minature world, with speeded-up evolution, that they can study. But here's the kicker--a truly creepy, ghostly being called the Plag (from Play-tex
plastic glove, which is what is was) starts rising from the planet to menace the observers. I won't the ending away, but I
guarantee you that you will never forgot that icky little monster.
The Spirit
In this episode a small group of scientists, headed by Patrick O'Neal's, recreate a miniature version of a distant planet called Wolf 359. Every detail of the planet is created the same as the original, from the plants to the animals. Through a "telescope" the scientist can view the evolution of the planet, but they also created something else. They created a "spirit," which kills in darkness. Soon the scientists have to battle the spirit to survive.
It is interesting that in Start Trek-The Next Generation the Enterprise battle the Borg in Wolf 359.
Petrie-Dish Planet Poltergeist Petrifies Professor!
Wolf 359 is a planet microscopically duplicated in Patrick O'Neal's desert laboratory terrarium. O'Neal, wife Sara Shane and assistant Peter Haskell soon notice that the mini-planet isn't as uninhabited as they thought - it has a ghostly occupant that can stare straight at them, fully aware, for decades at a time (in the petrie-dish planet's speeded-up time frame). Before long, it's even leaving the tank and paying them all a visit...
This is a genuinely creepy story, with cheap but clever special effects. O'Neal's mounting anxiety is nicely balanced by his refusal to surrender to fear, in studying the growing phenomenon. Sara Shane is a strong but still feminine personality, who convincingly supports her husband's efforts while desperately trying to rescue him from them. Haskell believably gets the s**t scared out of him, but still staunchly stands by in case stubborn O'Neal gets into trouble.
Occasionally heavy-handed, but more often underplayed to good effect. The atmosphere of dread is palpable and mounting, throughout. A worthy OL entry that starts well, and builds to a satisfying climax.
