Customer Reviews of Out of Reach
Out of Reach I think Patrica Lewin is great - this is the second book of hers that literally kept me up all night until I finished it!
Spunky heroine vs. child abductors.
The heroine of Patricia Lewin's new novel, "Out of Reach," is Erin Baker. She is a Washington-based member of the CIA, a martial arts expert, and a Professor at Georgetown University. She's smart, she's fit, and she's self-confident. However, Erin is still haunted by the day when her mother asked her to mind her eight-year-old sister, Claire. Erin did not watch Claire very closely, and tragically, her sister was abducted. Although Claire was eventually found and returned to her family, she suffered an emotional breakdown. Years later, she still has not recovered from her ordeal.
The past comes back to haunt Erin when she spots an ice cream vendor who resembles Claire's abductor. Erin teams up with Alec Donovan, an FBI agent whose specialty is finding missing children. Together they try to track down a kidnapping ring led by a brutal and shrewd mastermind.
"Out of Reach" features attractive good guys, nasty bad guys, few surprises, and little suspense. Even though Erin Baker has no standing with the FBI, she effortlessly and unbelievably worms her way into Donovan's investigation. The book has lots of coincidences and quite a few far-fetched plot elements. At best, "Out of Reach" is a conventional and escapist thriller that is interchangeable with many others of its type.
Fascinating Thriller
Patricia Lewin, author of highly acclaimed novel BLIND RUN, returns again with her latest, a thriller whose main protagonist is a CIA operative. Dr. Erin Baker, a Georgetown University professor, is also a CIA agent, working undercover to ferret out possibly terrorist sentiment among the students there while also caring for her young niece. When a small girl is abducted from the park Erin visits for her morning run, the ice cream vendor working there that day trigger's memories of a magician present at a Miami park where her sister, Claire, was abducted nineteen years ago. Though recovered four years after her disappearance, Claire has suffered from psychiatric difficulties ever since. Convinced that the ice cream vendor is the magician that took her sister, Erin approaches FBI agent Alec Donovan, as the two attempt to put the pieces together and search for other missing children.
Ms. Lewin's complex plot ties together the disappearances of children with a slave ring, and a powerful German businessman, General William Neville. As Alec and Erin search together to connect General Neville and the child snatcher in his employ to the abduction and sale of children, their lives remain in constant peril, until the novel's surprising conclusion. With the popularity of espionage plots in both visual and written media, this newest novel from Ms. Lewin should prove fascinating for those enthralled with the subterfuge of covert operations.
