Customer Reviews of Operating Systems Review
For any serious OS, network, or security developer This is the SIGOPS (that's Special Interest Group on OPerating Systems) newsletter. The format varies. Some issues, like the one illustrated on the product page, are conference proceedings. They report on the very latest research results, too new for books, and maybe ahead of the archival journals. <

>Regular journals are a mix. There's usually a listing of upcoming conferences and calls for papers, bits of SIG news, and an assortment of technical articles. The content is as varied as the members' interests: cryptographic protocols for a variety of purposes, stack and memory management, multiprocessor issues, communications, HS/SW integration, and lots more. The level is more research-y than anything in the trade rags, but not as rigorous as the Transactions. The writing can also be a bit less smooth than in the conferences or seriously refereed journals, but I'd rather see the rocky bits than miss out on the ideas. <

>This is a bit much for anyone just trying to get that database to talk to that web page. Those are tactical needs. This is for the strategic developer, the one who's putting together tomorrow's systems today, for hardware that doesn't exist yet. The technical end of your research library probably gets it - take a look, and see if this is information you want in your mailbox on a regular basis. Considering what a college credit costs these days, it's a heck of a bargain in ongoing eduation. <
