Customer Reviews of Open the Gates
"Cookin & Smokin" With Rhyne ... This album is on the same level as "Mel s Spell" with the same lineup of musicians it is bluesy and lyrical at the same time.
It seems that Rhyne mostly plays at his very best in the traditional organ trio setting.Mel Rhyne is probably the most underrated world class B3 player out there...in fact I think he is the very best of them all...he is at the same time both very refined and groovy and says that he listened to piano players like Mc Coy Tyner which is pretty clear when you listen to his lines..he is kind of the McCoy Tyner of the B3 organ..funky.bluesy.lyrical.modernistic..subtle.....his got it all. At times some numbers of this CD swing and grooves so hard that it is difficult to sit still..I have in particular "Blues for Mike & Teju" in mind..or Dizzy Gillespies jump blues from the forties "Blue N Boggie" where Rhyne is cookin on all cylinders.
Again Rhyne has choosen the company of guitar master Pete Bernstein and drummer Kenny Washington...on several numbers I feel that Rhyne is "stealing the show" but Bernstein is at his best on numbers like "In a Sentimental Mood" with a solo of almost eternal beauty and on the Wes influenced tune by Rhyne called "Loose Changes" and Washington "adds fire" here and there.
I can only repeat myself by saying Highly Recommended,,what else can I say?????
Open the Gates
This album is so wonderful. Anthony Wonsey, Nicholas Payton and Ron Blake are playing powerfully but elegantly. They are creating new style of hard bap Jazz.
