Customer Reviews of Only One Night
A young man torn between Ingrid Bergman and a circus girl Ingrid Bergman stars in "Only One Night" ("En Enda Natt"), a 1939 Swedish film directed by Gustaf Molander. Valdemar Moreaux (Edvin Adolphson) works in the circus, but he is really the illegitimate son of Magnus von Brede (Olof Sandborg), a wealthy aristocrat. Vadlemar is invited to assume his rightful place by his father, which means abandoning Helga Martensson (Aiono Taube), the woman he has been living with in the circus. Magnus wants to marry his son, who is not really comfortable with his new life, to his beautiful young war, Eva (Bergman). Neither of them wants to go along with this scheme, but Valdemar cannot help falling in love with her. However, when he gets drunk and tries to force himself on Eva, Valdemar realizes that he never should have left the circus. As with most of Bergman's films from this initial period in her celebrated career, "Only One Night" is a more adult storyline than you find Hollywood producing under the thumb of the Hays Office purity code. It deals frankly with the risque subjects of illegitimacy and extra-marital sex. Molander's films enjoy a deserved reputation for being psychological studies of their characters. You have to admit, it is unusual to see a film where the point is that the two stars do NOT end up with each other. This film (2477 meters long) is in Swedish with English sub-titles.
