PlayStation2 owners with a passion for Resident Evil's genre-launching gameplay are in luck: Capcom delivers the same world-famous gameplay style (sans zombies) in a beautiful action-adventure set in a mystical medieval Japanese kingdom. Onimusha: Warlords probably won't win any awards for groundbreaking gameplay, but the fast-paced action promises to overload the senses with more than enough stimuli to notice.

The experience is set in 16th-century Japan, a fantastical era in which warlords clash for control of the country. As the samurai Samanosuke, players volunteer to rescue the kidnapped princess Yuki. No surprise that the ultimate goal (and the entire story line, for that matter) falls by the wayside as hordes of demons converge on the player hour after hour. The weapons system benefits from the flashy graphics--as players discover and add gems to a gauntlet, weapon upgrades increase firepower with increasingly dramatic effects.

Graphically, the game is stunning. Carving through the levels--forests, tunnels, and the requisite dark, dank castle environment--isn't anything less than a spectacular experience, thanks much in part to the game's unusually high production values. Character models are built from up to 10,000 polygons each--high detail, even for a PS2 game. Subtle environmental effects--the wind flowing through the trees, for instance, ripples the fabric in characters' clothes--furthers the game's realism. The game's backgrounds are painstakingly detailed and nicely enhanced by dynamic lighting effects.

The talent behind the aural effects is just as impressive. Japanese actor Takeshi Kaneshiro lent his voice to the main character, and a 200-piece orchestra delivers a dramatic score.

Call over any PS2 skeptics in your neighborhood, then load up Onimusha: Warlords. A few minutes with this game may turn any zombie gamer into a next-generation gaming system fan. --Eric Twelker

Customer Reviews of Onimusha: Warlords

Onimusha: Warlords
Onimusha: Warlords is one of the best games on the Playstation 2 Computer Entertainment System. Like any other game, it has a couple of flaws, but that's not out of the ordinary. It really warms me to see what the PS2 is actually capable of, this game has amazing graphics, smooth control, a great storyline, and to top that off all of this running at a smooth 60 fps. You could say that this game is kind of like the past Resident Evils but, in reality it's a much much better game, although being a bit short the game makes up for itself by it's amazing graphics, gameplay, and storyline. Sure it doesn't have TOO deep of a story-line but the details and gameplay really make it worth while. The main conflict of the story is a princess has been kidnapped and the hero of the game, Samanosuke (a samaruai warrior), is called in to rescue Princess Yuki. Samanosuke, brings another character with him by the name of, Kaede. During certain parts of Onimusha you will switch off between these two characters to follow out the story, much like in the past Resident Evil games. When they arive at Nobunaga's castle they find the situation is far more critical then they had ever imagined, you'll have to fight more then your basic share of zombie like demons, and demon bosses. The bosses are worthy of the word "boss" it might take you a couple of tries on some of the harder bosses closer to the end of the game if you're not a fan of the survival horror genre, but they aren't impossible to defeat. Just the way it's supposed to be. The only way Samanosuke will be powerful enough to defeat this army of demons is to equip the gauntlet of the ogres, a soul-absorbing device that fits on Samanosuke's arm. all-in-all I give Onimusha: Warlords a 5 out of 5 star rating. Once again, this is definitly one of the best games yet on PS2. Which isn't saying a whole lot considering the very low number of quality games the Playstation 2 has to offer at this time, but if you want your money's worth go get this game, I have a gut feeling that you'll be satisfied.

AMAZING GAME!
Onimusha takes place in medival Japan where warloads fight each other over power. Your character is a samurai named Samanosuke. Samaosuke has to find the kidnapped Princess Yuki before she is sacraficed and the evil Nobanaga becomes more powerful than before. Samanosuke goes thru different areas, like castles, woods, caves and even the dark relam battling zombies and solving puzzles to find Yuki.
The Game/puzzles were relatively easy and not too complex. The game was basically slash, kill, slash, cut, and alot of blood. The Power gauntlet allows you to steal souls from the enemies so that you have more power moves for your weapon. Graphics is amazing and stunning, very smooth and well textured. Controls are not complicated and are very simple. The game is addicting and will leave the player playing but not challanged. This Game is one of those rental types because I felt that I didnt need to play it again after I was done.
Capcom has produced an excellent game like resident evil and I am eagarly waitng for Onimusha2
