Customer Reviews of One Night With the King
Only for subnormals and preteen girls This film has really wonderful mis en scene - great sets, wardrobe, and makeup. Other than that, it is one of the worst, most unwatchable films I've seen. The acting is terrible to the point that I don't think the actors even understood the context of their lines, which are generally horribly written. Also, there are repeated slow motion scenes that add zero drama but add unintentional comedy. The story drags and drags and drags. It tries to be an story for adults, or at least for families, but it only works for little girls with Cinderella dreams.
Hauntingly Beautiful
I have been drawn to watch this DVD several times - something I rarely do with films. The king is strikingly handsome and kind, and Esther wins him over with her beautiful personality. The scene where she risks death on behalf of her people by approaching the king unbidden is powerfully dramatized. I loved this so much that I bought another DVD entitled "Esther" in the hopes of enjoying the story from another director's perspective, but it simply could not compare to "One Night with the King." This is a winner.
Too much "artistic" license
The biblical story of Esther is a beautiful one and I looked forward to this movie. It is so bad I couldn't watch it all. I thought I was watching a Disney movie. The actress portraying Esther looks nothing like a woman from the period and area, rather seems and acts like a bubbly American starlet such as might be featured in an insipid teenage movie.(I'm American) Her real name, Tiffany, really fits her, not that there's anything wrong with that, other than it had me wondering whose girlfriend she must have been to get the part. Either her portrayal or the direction she received is bad and she has no chemistry with the actor portraying the king. There is more than one scene where she abruptly grins and then does something "mischievous", such as grabbing women's scarves and snapping them at the women. I thought she might break out singing. Whoever wrote the script should be ashamed. There are so many ill-conceived, cringe worthy additions and blatant changes to the biblical account that I had to stop it as the waste of time and denigration to the beautiful story it is. The movie has some beautiful sets but also some of the worst, fake-looking wigs, such as an old man with jet black hair parted in the middle halfway down his forehead. Where's MST3K when you need them?
