Customer Reviews of One Man's Blues
Makes me want to hear more I became aware of Glenn Wilson through his knowledgeable posts on usenet newsgroups, so I wanted to hear his music. "One Man's Blues" is a great introduction. The CD was recorded live at a club called Bogart's in Richmond, VA, and the sound quality is excellent. Wilson's Jazzmaniacs combo is a tight foursome with no weak links; lots of great interaction between the players. Bari sax is one of my favorite instruments, and Wilson's playing is inventive and assured. Steve Kessler's piano is a particular delight, both in his crisply articulated solos and his tasteful comping behind Wilson. Jim Masters on bass and Tony Martucci on drums complete the mix. Personal favorites on the CD include "More Than Too ... It's Five," a beautiful ballad; "It Was a Very Good Year," an edgy up-tempo arrangement by Wilson of the Sinatra hit; and "Mayberry R.I.P.," an inventive reharmonization of the original that's not only good for a laugh but also musically interesting in its own right. Overall, the CD is very solid; the only minor quibble is that the sound balance occasionally seems to overpower Wilson's bari. I'm looking forward to adding more of Wilson's work to my collection!
