Customer Reviews of Old Dogs
kibble There is no bigger Jerry Reed fan than me. And I love the music of Bobby Bare and Waylon Jennings. I admit, Mel Tillis as a singer has never done much for me, although I admire his songwriting. Given that, except for Waylon, these Old Dogs can't get record labels to roll over for them, it's disappointing that this heavily marketed effort isn't better. The blame, in my opinion, rests soley on Shel Silverstein's silly shoulders. With only a couple of exceptions, this is a weak bunch of songs. Reed and Jennings have written far better material on their recent outtings, and this one could have benefited by some of their talents. "Nashville is Rough on the Living" and "Me and Jimmie Rogers" are fine songs. But, Bare's cut them before -- and with more elan, too. Here's hoping that next time out, someone lets the Old Dogs off Silverstein's leash...
Country when (real) country isn't cool!
I keep reading the reviews from those in the 50+ range saying how much they enjoy it, but, folks, I'm 27 & I love it too. They just don't play "real" country anymore these days-99% of what is on "country" radio these days doesn't even come close. I cut my teeth on Hank Williams, Sr. & other country greats & so I naturally had to like this one as well. Ya know, it really is a shame these guys can't get major radio play anymore unless it's with a novelty peice like "You're Still Gonna Die" (which is simply side-splitting, roll on the carpet funny!).
Sure, these guys may have tested positive for Branson (listen to "Billy B. Bad" by George Jones & you'll know what I mean), but these days, I'd say it is a whole let better than testing positive for a slot in the "country" (so-called) Top 40. If Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, et. al. are indicative of "new country", give me this anytime!!!
Hilarious
This is probably the funniest album ever made. Even if you're not normally a country fan, you may enjoy this. However, try to find the original, out-of-print double album (available initially through an 800 number) if you can. There are several even more hilarious songs on it.
