Kosuke Fujishima's delightful Oh My Goddess! began as a manga in 1988 and was made into a five-part OAV in 1993-94. Fujishima used bits of Western mythology for his offbeat romantic comedy: the three sister-goddesses are based on the Norns, the Fates in Scandinavian legends. Keiichi Morisato is a familiar anime type: a short, skinny nerd at the bottom of the pecking order. One afternoon, while he's stuck in his dorm taking phone messages for his older classmates and trying to order lunch, the lovely Belldandy appears and declares she is a goddess who will grant him one wish. Convinced she's part of an elaborate prank, Keiichi asks her to become his girlfriend forever--and is dumbfounded when she grants his wish. Her presence gets him kicked out of the all-male dorm, so they set up housekeeping in an abandoned temple. What should be an idyllic existence is soon complicated by the arrival of Megumi, Keiichi's kid sister; Urd, Belldandy's voluptuous older sister; and Skuld, her sulky younger sister. But despite the contretemps, the bond between Keiichi and Belldandy only grows stronger. Keiichi, like Tenchi or Akito in Nadesico, is initially unprepossessing, but his maladroit exterior conceals a genuinely kind heart. Perhaps because she's a real goddess, rather than a magical girl, Belldandy never whines or grows smarmy; she remains a warm, gentle presence. Voice actors Scott Simpson and Juliet Cesario offer sensitive performances that add to the series' charm and good-natured comedy. Unrated; suitable for ages 12 and up for minor nudity and occasional risqué humor. --Charles Solomon

Customer Reviews of Oh My Goddess (Vol. 1)

A great series anime, but it can get a little expensive...
Oh My Goddess! is, quite simply, a very enjoyable anime. Keiichi, a teenage boy is in the college dorms alone while his sempais are out. He misdials the phone when trying to order a pizza and accidentally calls the Goddess Help Line. Belldandy, a beautiful goddess, comes through the wall and tells Keiichi she will grant him one wish. Thinking this is all a prank by his sempais, Keiichi tells Belldandy he wants her to be with him forever, not knowing she's the real deal. His wish gets granted, and one thing leading to another, Keiichi gets kicked out of the dorms, and so the story starts.

The only real complaint I have is how only one episode was put per tape. At $14 a dubbed tape, this can get quite expensive. Even more so at the almost $20 per subtitled-version tape. The dubbed version is surprisingly good, so at least you can save a couple bucks and buy the dub.

Not To Be Missed
"Oh My Goddess" (or "Ah! My Goddess") is a sweet, 5-part, romantic-comedy anime series based off of the manga of the same title. It technically falls into the "harem" genre (loser guy surrounded by hot babes), but it doesn't follow the standard formula. In this DVD, we have the first three episodes. These three episodes set the table to introduce us to the main characters and major supporting characters.

The story is pushed very fast -- too fast in my opinion. So the main characters of Keiichi and Belldandy suffer from a lack of development. Supporting characters of Skuld and Urd have more development with less screen time. However, the sweetness and wholesomeness of the romance between Keiichi and Belldandy covers a lot of ground.

The DVD is done by AnimEigo and they did an outstanding job. The Enlish dub is very well done. Liberties are taken with the English version of the script, but I actually found that this was not offensive to me. And things like the title "sempai" are actually used in the English version! The English subtitles are nearly dead-on in being a literal translation of the original Japanese. This is very appreciated, especially to one learning Japanese!

Another welcome extra on the DVD is the English cast and director having audio commentary. They do give out some interesting information about certain things (like why they didn't do a literal English dub translation in spots). They crack a lot of jokes which are quite funny as they watch the episodes.

Bottom line: Anime fans of "Love Hina" or "Hand Maid May" should get this DVD! Purist will appreciate the job done on the English subtitles.

A feel-good show!
This is the type of show you watch to feel good about yourself and everything around you. There aren't any monsters or world-ending crises to deal with--the worst Keiichi and Belldandy have to deal with are finding a house and a minor misunderstanding with a love potion. Other than that, they basically bask in each other's love.

Oh, and let me clarify something. I own all of the books currently in English, both dvds, and the movie. Despite what you may think, this is not like Tenchi Muyo or Love Hina. Belldandy is the only one with the hots for Keiichi. Urd treats ALL MALES like that, with the teasing and (for some) the kissing. That is just the way Urd's mind works. So her little scene with Keiichi meant nothing. And Skuld hates Keiichi, with all her heart, at least at this point.
