Customer Reviews of Off the Wall
Michael Jackson's 'Off The Wall' I don't believe this is the best MJ album ever, and I say that having been a fan for many years. I believe, and I may get incredible slack for this, that Michael Jackson is an artist for all time.
He has the finest ability to morph in to any musical style that is hip, and of the moment. He is a fine singer, an incredible (and highly over-looked) songwriter, and an all around world class entertainer.
So why is this album not as great as the rest, but still have five stars? Because Michael Jackson never falters. Not anywhere on this disc is there any bad material.
From 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough' right through to 'Burn This Disco Out' Michael never falters. I'm caught in this dizzying, disco frenzy for the first five songs, then propelled into this beautiful slow movement of music. Which, by the way, all Michael Jackson albums follow. From Thriller, to Bad, to Dangerous (unterly his most ambitious and most underrated piece of work).
And I do agree with the person who believes that 'I Can't Help It' is one of the best songs ever. 'Cause it is! Great song, as is this entire album, it is filled with great songs, beautiful production and a great artist with a fine soul for music.
This album laid the ground work for the rest of his carrer. Be it commercially successful, or artistical challenging.
This album shines because it symbloizes it's time in history, as does every other Michael Jackson album since.
Five out of Five.
An out-of-the-blue classic.
It's hard to believe with the benefit of afterthought that Michael Jackson's solo career took such a long time to take off, namely a good part of a decade. But when it did, it rose into unprecedented heights both commercially and artistically.
Jackson at this point had not yet evolved into the strange, shrieking vocal imp of his post-Bad era, and his singing on this record is remarkable, a sexy yet wholesome, soulful yet understated delivery capable of many shadings. The falsetto of "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough" is almost like Prince; "Off the Wall"'s brooding beat is irresistible; "Rock with You" is dreamily romantic and gorgeously sung; and "Working Day and Night" is a breathless rush, classic dance music. Then there's the celebrated balladeering of "She's Out of My Life", which remains one of Jackson's best ballads to this date, a mode that he lost touch with starting with Dangerous.
Michael Jackson may be behind the times now, but back in 1979, he was way ahead.
Not a "Thriller"
Certainly not thiller, but better than most albums released today. Best tracks includes Off The Wall, I Can't Help It and Rock With You. Only track that misses for me is Burn This Disco Out.
