Customer Reviews of Of Challenge and Of Love
Now here's something interesting... Igor Stravinsky and the American composer Elliott Carter knew each other quite well when the former was alive, and on this disc the connections between them (through the specific medium of songs for soprano with piano accompaniment) are deftly examined by Lucy Shelton and John Constable.
Both composers lived and worked to a great age: Stravinsky was an active composer and performer until just before his death at 89; Carter is now in his early 90s and continues to astound, shock and fascinate audiences with his new orchestral works. Both composers have explored beyond the "comfortable" boundaries of tonal music, through octatonicism and later through serialism. They have unique means of expressing themselves, however, and in listening to this disc it's up to you to decide what you like and don't like about them (and for that matter, whether or not the music presented makes a satisfying sequence or not).
Carter's songs come first, and are mostly in English. They abound in exciting vocal tactics and florid virtuosity for the accompanist. I have to say that the earlier works are more to my liking than the later ones, although that is not to say that they are musically poor or deficient (remember, some of these are the works of quite an old man!). Stravinsky meanwhile manages to be more expressive, although the Russian element in most of the songs chosen is abundantly clear - there's still plenty of work for Constable on the piano, and to his credit he carries it off very well. Shelton's Russian accent is similarly convincing.
The fine booklet notes discuss the works "in passing." At the end, a conclusion is reached that Carter and Stravinsky are really distinguished by their outlooks on life and composition: Carter is always reaching forward into new times, whilst Stravinsky is (unconsciously) reaching back to memories of childhood. That, along with everything else, is really quite fascinating.
Is it good music, well performed? I cannot really say- I must admit I don't have a great enthusiasm for it; neither do I completely dislike it. (It certainly is difficult to perform - Shelton and Constable do it justice and are to be commended for tackling it.)
In conclusion, then, I must simply say that this disc should prove very interesting especially if you like 20th century music.
Excellent performance of rarely heard jewels!
I've been looking for a recording of The Owl and the Pussycat for years and finally found one! Both the Carter and the Stravinsky are competent performances. Very enjoyable, perfect songs for a rainy Sunday afternoon at home.
