Customer Reviews of Obsulum Obscenum
Brutal and cutting edge Death metal. This was not my first Hypocrisy album but after reading Michael Bethancourt's review and hearing about how brutal and evil the music is, I decided to take my chances. When I first listened to this album I was surprised (seeing how this is coming from a person who was introduced to Hypocrisy with "Abducted" and "The final chapter"). The music on this album is grinding, blasting, and rumbling, yet it has a sound of it's own. What separated this album from the crowd was the perfection of a downtuned, throbbing guitar sound that was virtually nonexistent in Metal up until 1993. Since then, countless Nu-metal bands including Slipknot, Korn, Adeema, and Machine head (post "The more things change") have poorly imitated and watered down the style of music found on this disc. Even Death metal bands have copied it. Anyone who listens to Death metal or "Nu-metal" needs to check out this album at one point or another. Hell, I'd play it for some Nu-metal fans just to show them what paved the way for the genre of music they listen to. Won't they be shocked!
"Let the Metal flow"-Chuck Schuldiner
The roots of it all
This is the most imitated album from the 1990's. It's not the first low-tuned album, but it is the album that defined the alltogether low, throbbing sound that has been used both in the ultra-evil genre as well as much of the crass, commercial nu-metal garbage, (what kind of word is that, Nu-metal? What are they gonna call it five years from now?) So much of what has been recorded since 1993 would not exist if it weren't for this album. A lot of people criticise Hypocrisy and Sepultura for having recorded some nu-metal in recent years. Well, guess what: of all the bands out there, those two are allowed to without getting any .... from people, because they invented it. There's just one big difference: when these guys play it, it's still cool, because it's so heavy and so evil. This is not the fastest stuff out there, but I've been listening to death-metal for a very long time, whereas I first heard this album just over a year ago, and it's one of those albums where even though it's more than ten years old, it is still totally cutting edge (like "Human" by Death). It was definately way ahead of its time... ahead of any time, perhaps, and that is what sets a really remarkable album apart from the rest. Don't let the critics fool you: people who are not so impressed by this album just don't like it because it isn't generic enough for their tastes.
This album is on the very short list of albums you can play from beginning to end without wanting to skip any songs (I'm a notorious skipper, myself). If possible, find a copy of the extended version: it is a lot better. I think they call that one the digi-pack.
Extensive CD with a great "historical" value
This album is history in the making of Hipocrisy. Defenitely not the greatest, but it lets itself being heard. One of Hipocrisy's seasons of change, diferences in music style and tones will be heard.
