Customer Reviews of November-Coming-Fire
Let the Horror Start! Samhain comes when the seasons shift to the cold and the dead, and NOVEMBER-COMING-FIRE is its soundtrack. With apocalyptic, nihilistically joyous tracks like "Let the Day Begin" and "In My Grip" Glenn Danzig and cohorts once again delve into the netherworld and come up blood-spattered. Grinding, squealing guitars from a frigid hell, Glenn's trademark gutteral, lupine howl, and bass and drums pounding in pagan fury mark a step up from the first Samhain release (one step away from the slightly more mainstream sound of solo Danzig).
Most of the songs are classics. The spine-chilling mid-tempo chant "Halloween II" is actually a Latin text for lycanthropic transformation. The title track is one of the best, a rousing, rocking hymn to the season of the dead:
"Night calls on summer's end
Dark aspect, blood divine
Knee-deep, the blood of swine
Come season, come reborn"
"Kiss of Steel" is JG Ballard's Crash set to a metal/punk tune:
"Press your face to the metal crash/Feel your nose and cheek bones crack." This paean to automotive destruction is a world away from the usual supernatural subjects of Danzig's songs.
But the finest songs here are "Mother of Mercy," "To Walk the Night," and "Let the Day Begin." The first of these is one of Danzig's best songs ever, a song he performed on his first solo tour. A tortured soul seeks respite from his evil deeds ("I haven't killed in such a long time") in the bosom of a dark, infernal goddess ("We all want our time in Hell"). With its soaring chorus and subtle bridge, "Mother of Mercy" will be on your lips as you, too, search for her.
The nightmarish ballad "To Walk the Night" is for all those mopey, Romantic suicidal types who just don't seem to fit in during daylight hours.
"I have wandered my whole life long
The night becomes my bride and everything else must die
World without end
For me"
And then there's "Let the Day Begin," a celebration of the end of the world. In these times, this passage strikes me as eerily accurate:
"Let the Jews all scream
Let the Catholics burn
Let the Protestants hide
Let the false ones wallow in their own demise"
Creepy, huh? The earth in flames, and the dark ones revel in it. "Human Pony Girl" is all dark eros and domination; Danzig has called it a kind of Stooges song, and he's not too far off; with its repetitive, mindless pounding, it is a distant cousin of Fun House.
This new remastered edition sounds incredible; however, there are no extra tracks nor lyric sheet. The whole CD is 28 minutes long, but any chance to acquaint yourself with Glenn Danzig's view of the inferno is time well-spent indeed.
DAY OF THE DEAD
If you liked GLENN's work in the MISFITS then you'll probably like SAMHAIN. Escpecially if you didn't get into EARTH A.D. Every song on NOVEMBER-COMING-FIRE could have been performed by the MISFITS (some of them were ie; HALLOWEEN II as well as HORROR BIZ on the INITIUM album & ALL HELL on the FINAL DESCENT album), even though GLENN has stated the reason he broke up the MISFITS is because he wanted to play stuff that JERRY & DOYLE couldn't play. He was also frustrated with the ever changing lineups of the MISFITS but this happened even in SAMHAIN & DANZIG as well. With SAMHAIN, DANZIG broke away from the horror movie influence of the MISFITS & chose more of a literal horror. Still using morbid & horrific influence but not specifically dealing with horror on the screen. What ever his influence these songs work very well, dark & moody being the theme. The album paints a surreal- morbid-unholy picture of doom. Pick this up along with INITIUM & FINAL DESCENT & be prepared for the long awaited box set as well. Loaded with unreleased material & material no longer available as well as a video the SAMHAIN BOXSET will be a must have.
Music for the Occult!!
For anyone who's ever been into the Occult in any way, whether it was worshipping demi-gods, divining the future on a burnt piece of aluminum foil, or just plain worshipping Satan. This is the soundtrack. No, this isn't like Deicide, or Slayer..This isn't mosh pit stuff here. Instead, a much more hypnotizing, melodic rock with a black magic darkness rarely executed, almost never pulled off, except by the MASTER Glenn Danzig that would serve much better for a night of dark prayers than either aforementioned bands. Every song on this album is catchy and great. With powerful guitars and wailing vocals. The thing I love about this album is it's non-popularity. Almost nobody's heard this stuff. Which makes it easier for me to pretend that I'm the only one that has. I love Samhain. Always have. If you've stumbled onto this page and this review take my word for it. You'll NEVER hear anything else quite like it. And as Glenn sang: WE ALL NEED OUR TIME IN HELL !! WE ALL LOVE OUR TIME IN HELL!!
