Customer Reviews of Nova: Cut to the Heart
Very controversial! Indeed a documentary full of controversy. For patients with congestive heart failure the only chance for survival is through heart transplantation. However, finding a donor is often difficult, and patients are often left to die. Nova documents a new controversial surgical procedure that offers patients with congestive heart failure one last chance at life. The surgical procedure was developed by a Brazilian born cardiovascular surgeon by the name of Baltiste. Dr. Baltiste believed that the heart is proportional to the body it serves therefore when the heart is enlarged (typically found in congestive heart failure) it can no longer function properly because it is no longer in proportion to the body. Dr. Baltiste concluded that to bring the heart back to normal proportion one has to reduce the size of the enlarged heart. The procedure involves removal of a portion of the left ventricle of the heart; the part of the heart that pumps blood to all our body parts. This life saving procedure is met with arrogance and condemnation by United States doctors despite the fact Dr. Baltiste has performed this procedure on thousands of Brazilian patients.
An Eye Opener!
Another spectacular NOVA documentary. Cut to the Heart gives viewers an indepth look into a new surgical procedure that has been found to improve the health of patients with congestive heart failure. The film documents the difficulty of pioneering cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Baltiste, in his quest to bring this new procedure to all patients in the world. The procedure involves the removal of heart muscle to reduce the size of enlarged hearts typically found in congestive heart failure. The documentary shows doctors in the USA support and reject the new procedure.
