Customer Reviews of Notebook
Better Than..., but not as good as... The Partridge Family Notebook is a good recording. The sound is excellent, as usual. The best thing about the production is that it is a great improvement over their previous album-"Shopping Bag" and is definetly much better than the recording that followed it- "Crossword Puzzle (not yet released on cd). This album demonstrates a vocal maturity in David Cassidy's voice, that is very nice to hear. Six of the songs are great, four are so-so, and one is really unbearable(the cover of The Animals-We Gotta Get Out Of This Place). As with all PF recordings, the musicianship is excellent-considering you have the likes of Larry Carlton, Hal Blaine, Larry Knetchel, etc. All in all the cd is a real pleasant, enjoyable listen. Not the best, but definitly not the worst. Enjoy "Friend and a Lover", Looking Through the eyes of love" and "Maybe Someday"
A beautiful remaster of an uneven album
By the time "Notebook" came out in 1972, the people behind the Partridge Family had already churned out four other albums, a Christmas album, and a greatest hits collection. To say that they were hurting for inspiration would be an understatemet. Thus the use of covers, and the utilization of Bobby Hart, who besides being one of the Monkees' principal songwriters/producers, had a long career of writing hits. The results, though, didn't quite work.
"We Gotta Get Out of this Place" just isn't Partridge, for example. It's much too adult. Ditto the original "Take Good Care of Her." Part of the appeal of Partridge music, after all, is its innocence-- "A storybook love...a fantasy world where we love one another" (to quote from one of the album songs). The darker themes in "We Gotta Get..." and "Take Good Care..." doesn't mesh with the sugary fantasy of "Storybook Love," "Together We're Better" and "Maybe Someday."
Having said that, let me assure you that the CD itself is an aural treat. The Partridges (or the people who performed under that name) have never sounded so crisp, so sparkly. The backing vocals are clear and sweet, all the instruments used (including a mean acoustic guitar which simply can't be heard with any detail either on vinyl or on previous releases of songs from the album on compilation cd's). And David Cassidy has never been in better voice on CD! Every nuiance of his wonderful voice comes through soaring above the instrumentation and backing vox, a bird in flight rising and falling with all the turbulence of adolescent emotions.
If you recall later seasons of the tv show, where many of these songs appeared--or if you're looking for some wonderful early 70's pop-- you need to add this CD to your collection!
write this one down in your notebook for buying!
This was a surprise to find on CD! It's the one album of the Partridge Family that kind of slips your mind. Looking at the song titles- I can't remember what some songs sound like(and this is their only CD that makes me feel that way!). It was originally released in late 1972 with no picture on the cover! That was a stupid idea and is probably a reason why it didn't sell as well as the previous albums and would begin their downfall on the charts. But for fans, like myself, this is well worth having in your collection. Like everybody else, TOGETHER WE'RE BETTER is a favorite of mine as well as the hit LOOKING THROUGH THE EYES OF LOVE(it grew on me over the years) and WALKING IN THE RAIN but the rest of the selections are equally just alright and nothing special.
