The Larry Sanders Show was at the forefront of changing the genre of TV comedy, and influenced the development of many shows to follow, like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Arrested Development, and both versions of The Office. The source of that inspiration is on full display here, as talk-show host Larry Sanders (Shandling) along with his producer Artie (Rip Torn) and his "poor deluded bastard" sidekick Hank (Jeffrey Tambor), struggles to keep his late-night talk show on the air despite dropping ratings, absurd notes from the network, and a hilarious tendency to self-sabotage his personal life. His guest stars, including some of the biggest names in show business, seem to enjoy lampooning their images and provide some of the sharpest comic moments. It's great stuff, and it's too bad all six seasons are not scheduled to be released on DVD. Shandling reportedly went this route with the release, rather than continuing with complete seasons, because of a desire to wrap it all up at once after a long legal battle with producer Brad Grey. While many fans might bemoan the fact that there will be no complete-season sets of The Larry Sanders Show released after this, there are episodes from all six seasons here to enjoy, including the first and the double-part finale. With a gem like this, it's better to savor what's available than to lament what might have been. --Daniel Vancini

Customer Reviews of Not Just the Best of the Larry Sanders Show
A Great Set Someone please explain to me why amazon would let stand all these completely ignorant people "reviewing" a disc they haven't seen nor that they have any intention of purchasing. The purpose of these amateur "reviews" is, one would think, to actually talk about the product, not what one wishes the product were. So, to all those who've wasted everyone's time, please, go do something else than post your blather for the whole world to read. Onto the set: The episodes included in this collection are great. To the gentleman who complained about the quality - you obviously never saw the show when it aired - this DVD perfectly replicates what the show looked like. The quality is top-notch - if they'd used a low bit rate as this guy suggests, NONE of it would look good. I gotta tell you... The extras are mostly wonderful - some of the interviews with the guests are so strange and wacky you wonder if we're being put on. There are some very touching moments, too. This is a wonderful set, and I recommend it highly. It would be lovely to have full seasons, but for now, this will do nicely.
Buyer Beware
I won't discuss the merits or demerits of this collection versus full-season disc sets, I think that's already been discussed quite a bit here. I would like to warn all prospective buyers, however, about the startling poor picture quality on these DVDs. The parts of the show shot on video tape (i.e. the "on-set" footage) look fine. However, the show-within-a-show scenes shot on film look, in a word, horrible. And since this kind of footage makes up the bulk of each episode, the overall experience is very disappointing.

>Not that this would be the first DVD anybody with a quality LCD or plasma display would pop in to wow their friends with anyway, but with computer and DVD mastering technology being what it is nowadays, there is no reason for the picture to look this bad. Most scenes appear as if you view them through a screen door, and just about every shot of the Larry Sanders Show production offices where the overhead flourescent fixtures are visible show lots of noise and artifacts on any detail (like Larry/Gary's hair) that gets between the light source and the camera lens. Even without high-contrast information, the amount of grain present in any shot of the filmed scenes is distracting.

>It could be that Sony used more data compression in order to pack more episodes onto a 2-DVD set, but the current releases of Miami Vice, which were shot several years earlier, manage to put about the same amount of content on a DVD (approx 4 hours) without sacrificing the picture quality to such an alarming degree. Once again, there is no excuse for the way these DVDs look given the state of the art today. In my opinion, these DVDs look just a step better than a well-preserved VHS copy of the show. Many others have complained about the compromise a buyer has to make to get anything other than the entire first season on DVD. Add compromising picture quality to the list of compromises. Shame on you Sony!
why all reviews here are negative?

>1. This is the best comedy show ever created!!!!
<
>2. This dvd is the only place you can see the show (sure not the full show but come on you get 23 episodes in 1 DVD set, not bad). Unless you live in england no US outlet will EVER play this show uncensored
<
>3. the extra material and commentary are something a true fan would like
<
>4. the seinfield - shandling dialog during the extras interview is a classic Larry David moment as is worth every penny spent on this dvd
