Customer Reviews of Norton Save and Restore

A realistic review
Reading all the extremely negative reviews about Norton's Save and Restore software makes me wonder who is really writing this stuff. <
>I am not a fan of Symantec's software by any means, i think Norton Antivirus is one of the most bloated and useless products in the software market, but i have to differ with most of the negative reviews about Save and Restore. <
>For the price i paid for this software (about $10 used) here in Amazon, i was able to backup the entire C drives of my workstation and my PVR computers and save them to an offline hardrive in case of an hardisk failure. The amount of time alone i spent installing the OS and applications on both computers makes the $10 worth many times over. <
>Also, you can create backups of files and folders in a constant schedule, so if you have two computers connected together on a network you can have them back each other. In case of an emergency, you just boot from the Save and restore CD and either connect through the network or connect the hardrive where your backups are to the computer you are trying to restore, and a few minutes later your computer will be up and running. <
>The only annoying thing i found, is that Save And Restore installs an application that sits on your taskbar tray and tells you are "unprotected" if you don't have Norton's Antivirus installed. You can get rid of this by running msconfig on Windows XP, and disabling "ccApp" from the computer's startup tab on msconfig. <

>2007-03-15 UPDATE: I have encountered some serious problems with Norton Save and Restore version 11. First when i tried to do a copy hard drive from one bootable Windows 2003 XP partition to a new hardrive, the imaged hardisk would boot the computer, but it would log you off as soon as you logged into Windows XP. I tried fixing this problem using various possible fixes i found on the net, such as booting from a special CD to edit the bootable registry, but nothing fixed the problem. <
>I even tried two different target hardrives but the results were the same, so I ended up creating a bootable CD with Norton Ghost 2003, and copied the bootable partition using Ghost 2003, and it worked fine. <
>I also tried to restore the partition from a recent Save and Restore hardrive backup, but when i booted from the Norton Save and Restore CD, the program would not mount the hardrive with the backup files, no matter what. <
>As it is usual with every Symantec product, Norton Save and Restore is FLAKY, so buy at your own risk. I would definitely not pay more than $10 for this product.

DONT BUY S&R!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bought it to move my 40gb drive to a 320gb drive. I'll admit I had a bunch of trouble doing this but after spending an entire afternoon I was able to switch drives. After that I went to conduct a backup but the funny thing is S&R is still reporting my 40gb drive. So being a Release Engineer by trade I uninstalled the proudct, deleted the symantec folder and then checked my registry. Once I thought it was clean enough I reinstalled S&R and it still listed the 40gb drive. This to me suggests the Symantec writes registry entries that can't be removed or modified once there. These registry entries are also hidden and won't come up using the search function. <
>This is when I contacted support, well the turnaround time for a response is 48 hours which I find unacceptable since our own Tech support department doesn't do that. Well over several emails that had the strong impression they were following a script that was made from keywords. Well I made the mistake of mentioning that I had itunes installed. Well that is all they needed. Symantecs reponse to me now is to install some gear security drivers. I asked what these drivers are for and was told that third party apps use them to access the cd/dvd drives. The strange thing is I use my cd/dvd drives everyday for viewing and burning of both formats and no problems. I've also never had a problem using itunes. Well its to the point now that they won't move the support any further unless I install these drivers. Its strange that backup software would have conflicts with applications that aren't running, with devices connected to the usb ports and need drivers to access drives it shouldn't be during a backup. One of supports first suggustions to me as to why I can't complete a custom backup job is my harddrive must be below 1mb of free space. Hmmm its says I have 50gb free. <
> <
>I haven't used any Symantec products in a long time because I got very tired of working around their conflicts but wanted some backup software and boy was it a mistake. I will never ever use another Symantec product again.

Imaging good - file backup poor.
The imaging portion of this product is great (it's Norton Ghost) - works just as it's suppose to. You can recover your whole PC in half an hour after a crash. <
> The file backup portion, which lets you backup frequently changed files on a more frequent basis (daily in my case) is terrible for one reason. It only allows for incremental backups. <
> Now, that doesn't sound like a big deal, but here's a scenario. You run your file backup and backup everything in C:\Files. Then you either want to back them up to another location (say a CD) or you have a problem with the location you just backed them up to. Guess what? There's no way to back those files up again unless they change! Wipe out the location where you backed up C:\Files and your out of luck. It'll still run, and say it's "done" backing up - but only changed files will ever be backed up again. <
> I've e-mailed symantec tech support on this and first they said to delete my backup job and create a new one - but that doesn't work! The program keeps a database log of all the backups it's done (you can search it for files) and it won't "waste" space by backing up a file that hasn't changed. In the above scenario if you try and restore a file that was on the original backup (where the media was bad, or you deleted it) - you'll get an error that it can't find the file...but the next backup, it still won't back that file up again. <
> I've gone to using the backup that comes with Windows XP for my daily backup, and just use this product for the image based backup.
