Customer Reviews of Northwest Frontier
Action-packed historical drama with flair If you're looking for action, this one's got it all. Lauren Bacall plays a doctor's wife who is devoted to saving a crown prince in India from Muslim factions who wish to destroy the last semblance of the prince's father's rule. With a hardy band of British and Indian players, they set out on a dangerous mission by train that includes ambushes, scenes of carnage and a dastardly plot to kill the crown prince in a breathtaking bridge scene that's not to be missed. Ms. Bacall is radiant, and plays this one with a quiet dignity well-suited to her strong lady's role. Wilfrid Hyde-White is a delight and Kenneth More's Capt. Scott is an A-1 action hero, with foibles and faults, but in the end a very stiff British upper lip. Herbert Lom is simply the devil incarnate, and you'll see why. As I said before, this is a Saturday-morning serial with a sophisticated worldview (geopolitical discussions are not just the backdrop, but the point) and enough well-paced action to more than satisfy.
Great suspenseful british empire adventure tale!
This film is one of those that somehow has slid under the radar but deserves better! Very good british empire themed film without ANY embarrasingly stupid 'hollywood moments' or sappy romance crap. Just a good story with an ever present suspensefull presense to it. The VHS print that is currently available is better in some parts than others. If viewing on a high quality/resolution tv you will need to crank back the sharpness etc a great deal or it will be quite fuzzy, otherwise it's perfectly watchable.
Also Known As "North West Frontier"
First a little clarification. I have several friends who really like this film but have had trouble finding it. The trouble is the title. This British film is titled "North West Frontier" but in the United States it was released , and is still shown on tv in the U.S., under the title "Flame Over India". Some, but not all , US releases have used the original British title thereby confusing buyers. This present US release uses the US title.
Under any title it is a rousing adventure story that rarely lets up over its 2 hours. The setting is the North West Frontier of India in 1905 where the local rajah is battling rebel tribesmen. In order to get his son and his governess (Lauren Bacall) to safety he entrusts them to a British officer (Kenneth Moore). On board a barely functioning train they make a 300 mile journey through some very unfriendly territory that is a times a real nail bitter. The film is crisply directed by J. Lee Thompson and was filmed on location with , as they used to say, a cast of thousands. No computer generated people but real flesh and blood.
Besides Moore and Bacall the very fine cast includes I.S. Johar, Wilfred Hyde-White and Herbert Lom. This is a great old fashioned adventure story that Hollywood , or anyone else, seems unable to make any more. It makes no pretentions but merely tries to give its audience a grand time. It succedes very well in doing that.
