Customer Reviews of Nobody Does It Better
It was a Start Im not really sure if Gina Thompson is still in the music buisness, I have not heard anything else from her since 1996. But this cd is very average with good vocals from the artist but the same repetitive beats. She has or had talent and this cd will grow on you. I gave her 3 stars just because it all sounds the same. Nevertheless I still listen to it, so it must be alright to get occassional airplay in my house. This cd speaks about love entirely and some of the tracks have a jazzy feel and others are dance joints. One Love.
"Nobody Does It Better" by Gina Thompson
I would call Gina's debut release: "Nobody Does It Quite The Same."(I obviously wouldn't really call it that, but it describes her style.) Thompson is a vocal acrobat who is trying to nudge her way into the hip-hop tinged R&B scene, competing against fellow crooners like Faith Evans, Deborah Cox and Brandy. It's obvious she wants her piece of the pie when she uses a tactic we've all seen before. "'Maybe if I feature a song with a rapper that's remixed by hit-maker Puff Daddy, I can get my 5 minutes of fame.'" Which is exactly what she did and no more. Alot of people today, in 1999, will look at you strange if you ask them about R&B singer Gina Thompson. You'll probably hear an answer of "Geenie who...?" It's really a shame, 'cause she can sing and had strong back up from a currently famous producer named Darkchild(worked with Mase, Brandy, Whitney Houston, Kirk Franklin...etc.) who provided Gina with innovative and "groove-me" type beats. Today, Darkchild is on his way to producing great tunes. I wish I could say the same of Gina Thompson. In all, I would say, if and only if you're a true R&B fan, to go and pick up the album. If not, just check out the Puff Daddy remix of 'The Things That You Do" along with the Darkchild remix featuring rappers Craig Mack and Method Man both on the same maxisingle. If you want an honest and informative report, then just look for the signature name atop other rap, R&B and hip-hop reviews. This is THE RAP REVIEWER checking out. ~Peace
thompson delivers on promise.
one part guest rapper (missy elliot)...three parts sampling already successful artists (stevie wonder, the winans, brandy)...a pinch of a covered classic (anita baker's "angel")...sounds like a recipe for hip-hop success, if ever there was one. unfortunately, gina thompson has not received widespread attention for her debut release, _nobody does it better_. it could be that, to make it as a hip-hop artist, you either need to rap or come off a lot harder than thompson portrays herself, or it could just be a short-coming of the promotions department of mercury records, but thompson deserves a lot of credit for _nobody does it better_. with vocals comparable to those of deborah cox and enough style to land her that vacant slot in en vogue, thompson is bound to come back strong on her second release. let's hope that on that album she relies less on other people's beats and more on peddling her own considerable talents.
