Customer Reviews of No Retreat and No Surrender
UnderWater Gardens Ravenous, Funker Vogt's first side project, is something of a fixtured oddity in the Funker Vogt world because it allowed them to do something they've been trying to do for some time; to live outside of the preset standards set by their mainstay moniker's sound. Instead of speaking on the frailties of human kindness and on the horrendous concepts within the walls of conquest, they move through spectrums of emotions and more humanist subjects as well. This creates something that is not only interesting to listen to as it pinballs back and forth through a variety of different of sounds, it also grants them the freedom to show their audience how multidimensional they really are. Still, as far as side-projects go, they shown this again with another Ravenous album, A Funker Vogt label that's stayed with them is some haunting method, and a Fictional moniker that does something even more out-of-character.
No Retreat No Surrender is the lighter side of the Funker Vogt mentality, using a different singer with less of a guttural sound and one that moves through the vocal ranges. This results in some slower sounds, some driven pieces than seem more EBM dance-oriented than overpowering, and some almost teary tracks. Of all the songs and sounds available on the album, I find myself pulled to the eerie vibrations cast one of those, "Underwater Gardens," because it projects an ambiance of surrealness it possesses within its hands. I'm also partial to the slower song "Traveler," because of its slow bleakness held within hands of sadness, and the dictation of aliens that aren't quite alien invading Earth in "Abandon Hope." Still, there are many a tune that moves through many an EBM sound, so listening to samplings from it isn't a bad call in anyone's book.
for fans of Funker Vogt that will allow them some movement in the realms where they traffic, then this would be something worth picking up. You'd actually be a little surprised at what they can accomplish by touching on more than the unified visions broadcast by the Funker Vogt namesake. Highly Recommende

This isn't the greatest cd, but if you are a Funker Vogt fan then this is a must have.
