Frank Nitti is NOT a doughnut!
Although the subject for this film i.e. Frank "The Enforcer" Nitti is well chosen, it lacks a definitive portrayal of this legendary bad guy and his exploits. Anthony LaPaglia gives one of his best film performances of HIS career yet it falls very short of my expectations. His character does not stand out like he should in his own tale of power,betrayal and violence. The action that should have been there was not there at all,especially what should have been the capstone of the movie. The only benefits of this film is the historical accuracy of this movie and that it is about the mob in Chicago pre and post Capone. The writers tried not to exaggerate what happened or simply make up what did not happen. This is evident but of course it will stay unwelcome AND unappreciated. This could have made a worthwhile project with a decent cast and well orchestrated plot. The performance given by another actor who played this character in a movie by Brian DePalma (hint hint) was definitely more fictious but certainly better and I think that will be remembered as the all time greatest depiction of this classic yet largely unknown gangster.
