Customer Reviews of Nintendo DS Lite Browser

Why Is The Wii Browser So Much Better?
I was excited to get the Opera Browser on my Wii, and I was rightfully excited. It was free, easy to use, and convenient. When I heard that a DS browser was coming our way, again I was excited. When it did come out I shied away from after reading some terrible reviews about it on the internet. That, and it costs between $30 and $40 so it wouldn't be worth buying to play with it. My dad, who also uses a DS, bought the browser, so I played with it. I was thoroughly disappointed. Every single page loaded so slowly. It took about 20 seconds to see anything, and then another 10 seconds to actually be able the use the page. The only way to make the pages load faster is to disable all pictures, and with no sound (except for clicking) or video pictures are one of the only interesting things. Also in the normal view mode the page is squeezed so much to fit on the width of the DS's screens, which messes up how you see the page. When asked of my opinion I told my dad that he should return it, but alas we couldn't due to some new federal law or something. So here I am with a DS browser that cost $30 more than the FREE Wii browser that works very well.

Is it Worth it?
The game comes with two parts. A regular DS game cartridge and a GBA game cartridge. When you firsp put the cartridges into the system, you'll be asked a series of questions asking for language, time zone, the option of using a password, setting up the Wi-Fi connection etc. <

>I suggest that you read the instruction booklet to get used to the contorls and options such as screen display, size, pictures or not pictures, etc. Once you get to know the system, it's pretty basic. If you're not the instruction reading type but would rather hit random things on the screen until you figure out what they do, that will work too. The row of toolbar items from left to right is: Foward, Backward, Refresh, History, ULR Entry, Bookmarks, Find, Settings, Help, Screen Mode, Picture on/off, Zoom, and Screen Switch. To go to a website click the URL entry option and enter the address using either the screen keyboard or the handwriting option. I perfer the keyboard. <
>While the handwriting option works fine, the keyboard is faster and much easier to use. <
>The bookmarks are done with folders and you can edit them and move them around. <
>The browser does not have flash, video, or audio playback, so if you were expecting to watch youtube on it, think again. And you can't use any instant messenger. <

>You can view the page in one of two ways. Full Screen Mode which takes the page and squishes it down so it's displayed running down two screens. Use the scrool to see more of the page. The main problem I see with this mode, is that it ruins the format of the page. The Dual Screen Mode shows the entire page scaled down, not changing the format. You simply move a box aroundwhich displays an enlargement of that box on the top or bottom screen depending on if you hit the Screen Switch option. I perfer this option with the enlarged part on bottom and scaled down part with the box on top. <

>I've had no problems checking my e-mail, sending mail, find my favorite websites (including Wikipedia without any problems), etc. It takes a little longer to load then the computer does, but not very long. It really depends on the website. If it's a large site, it takes longer. For example, Wikipedia takes longer to load than Ebay does and of course Google takes the shortest amount of time. It shouldn't take more then a mintue or two to pull up a larger page; no more then dial-up did for those of you who still remember dial-up and how slow it was or is still using it (we just got rid of ours yeaterday, so I'm one of those people). <
> <
>Overall, if you're just looking for something to get online to check a few sites or your e-mail at home or around town without getting using a computer or draging it with you, it's worth the $30.00 you'll spend on it, but that's just my opinion. <

Useful But Limited
Finally i can surf the internet on my DS, something that the Japanese have been able to do for a while. You'll need a wireless hot spot to connect, just as you would with a laptop. There are some downsides such as no video or sound, but if you need information or want to read some news on the web, this browser will be perfect. It has several standard features such as bookmarks and a history of sites you've recently visited. You can disable pictures for faster loading times, search for specific words on a web site, zoom in or out, and more. You can switch between two display modes- one mode simply displays the web page on both the top and bottom screen. The other mode shows a zoomed out overview of the web page on one screen, with the other screen zoomed in to show the text and links. Obviously the touch screen comes in very handy for browsing the web, as it replaces the functionality of the mouse. Overall this is a very useful web browsing program for your ds, even if it's limited. It can be a little slow when viewing pages with lots to load, but you can always turn the pictures off to improve the speed. I have a laptop but hardly take it out with me, and i don't browse the web on my cell phone (which costs money anyway), so this little program will really come in handy for me. I live in NYC where there are lots of internet hot spots, so if i'm out and need to know when a movie is playing or i want to read my email, this is just perfect for that. <
