Customer Reviews of Night and Day
Classic Jackson I considered Joe Jackson to be another punk rocker/new waver who had one catchy hit song (Is She Really Going Out With Him?) and little else going for him. However, the first time I heard "Steppin' Out" on the radio, I turned into the nearest parking lot to hear the rest of the song. I was amazed when the DJ said it was by the very same Joe Jackson. I bought the album "Night And Day" shortly after it came out and was immediately impressed by its musical sophistication. I stepped into "Another World" when the first song blasted out of the speakers. The Latin drum beat and bossa nova piano displayed a musical maturity that was both surprising and irresistible. "Steppin' Out" has one of the most memorable melodies of any hit song. The lyrics urge a young couple to go out and paint the town, but could also be applied to the punk rock movement. "We, so tired of all the darkness in our lives. With no more angry words to say to come alive. Get into a car and drive to the other side. Steppin' out..." This song is immediately followed by "Breaking Us In Two," in which the couple is at a crossroads. In trying to talk out their differences, they only come up with more reasons for breaking up. The song features another classic melody, dominated by piano and percussion. "Cancer" is a mambo with an upbeat melody, which works surprisingly well with its morbid subject matter. Since everything gives you cancer, why not indulge and enjoy life while you can? "Real Men" explores the slippery slope of sexuality, with a chorus that sounds like a Phil Spector production. "A Slow Song" gradually builds to a climax, featuring Joe's strongest vocals, and ending on the piano's melodic fade out. I wish A&M records would release a special 20th anniversary CD of this classic album.
An Idealized, Urbane Playground!
This album may represent the perfect NYC public relations ad - the idea of all of its citizens as urbane, upbeat, upscale sophisticates, with just the right amont of cynical wit to pass on to tourists!
Coming right after Jumpin' Jive, it seems clear that Joe Jackson wanted to wed the mature, distanced lyrics of Porter or Gershwin to a type of
Salsa that was "in" among Mahattenites at the time. This marriage only completely works on "Steppin' Out" but "Real Men" and "A Slow Song" show a disarmingly accurate view of the anxiety and loneliness that often lurk beneath urban sophistication. Well worth repeated listenings!
A strong release
This still remains Joe Jackson's milestone release.
Most likely due to the mix of catchy rhythms and wonderful piano work.
Much of the music is upbeat and fun to listen to, even many years after being released.
