Customer Reviews of Newtype USA
Male-oriented, but still OK As far as anime magazines in the U.S. go, Newtype is pretty good. The news & newtype section has introduced me to many great anime series I'd have never considered watching had I not read it *cough*s-CRY-ed*cough*, and it's always nice to get the DVD or two and check out some new series. The articles have a slight tendancy towards sounding like ads, but if you can get over that, it's OK. There are a lot of ads, which can be helpful if you're looking for places to buy the latest anime merchandise, but otherwise they're like popup ads - annoying, always there, and impossible to get rid of (unless you want to cut up the magazine).
To top it off, the magazine is obviously male-oriented. I don't reccomend it to female otakus at all. Guys would probably like it, but I'm not a guy, so I really can't tell you...
However, compared to the other U.S. anime magazines, newtype is big, has great bonus items, and has a lot of info on non-mainstream anime.
Overall, I'd like to give it about 3.5 stars, but since I can only do 3 or 4, I rounded up. Hope this helps you in deciding whether or not to get it, in any case...
Top of Its Class
'Newtype USA' has positioned to be the premium magazine for Anime film and related genre in the US, like its Japanese version coversthat market. Thick, glossy, and beautifully illustrated it is filled with information that can only delight the otaku in waiting. A typical issue will contain in depth studies of one or more new releases. These are much more than articles, and include interviews, illustrations, and many collateral details. Anime activities (films, current series, clubs - you name it) are covered for both the Japanese and US markets. Game, book and model reviews add even more layers of detail. There is even a manga insert.
Now that anime has reached the level of popularity where the number of new releases on the US market are getting difficult to keep track of, the need for an in-depth, glossy format magazine has outgrown the available resources. 'Newtype USA,' as commercially oriented as it is, coveres a large number of films on a monthly basis. Most of these in some detail.
Each issue is a lot of magazine. Extras include free DVD's, postcards and centerfolds. Coverage is worldwide, with a focus on what is happening in the US and Japanese markets. Art quality is superb, and the writing sets a very high standard. If you want to keep informed and up-to-date about the anime world you will find this magazine is worth all of its admittedly steep cost. They are an excellent reference source that you will want to keep around for some time to come.
