Customer Reviews of New York Yankees Subway Series 3-Pack (1951, 1953, 1956 World Series)
The New York Yankees win a trio of Subway Series The New York Yankees won four of the five Subway Series in which they played during the 1950s, and three of those Fall Classics are included on this tape: (1) 1951 was when the Giants won the NL pennant after coming back from 13 ½ game back in August, finally winning the pennant with Bobby Thomson's dramatic home run in the playoffs. The Giants had a 2-1 lead in the Series before the Yankees won three straight to claim their third straight World Championship. This was the final World Series for Joe DiMaggio and rookie Mickey Mantle injured his knee when his cleats caught in a drain in the outfield. (2) Yankee manager Casey Stengel won his fifth consecutive World Championship as the Yankees defeated the Dodgers in six games. Brooklyn's Carl Erskine set a record with 14 strikeouts in Game 3, but Mantle won two games with homers as the teams set a record with 17 round trippers. (3) After the Dodgers finally claimed Brooklyn's only World Championship in 1955, the Yankees reclaimed the crown in 1956 in a dramatic seven game series. Don Larsen pitched the only perfect game in World Series history in Game 5, but then Clem Labine defeated Bob Turley 1-0 in 10 innings to force a deciding Game 7. However, the Yankees blasted four home runs as they routed the Dodgers 9-0 behind Johnny Kucks. The Yankees set a record with 12 homers in the series, three of them by Mantle. It would have been nice to have a set or even a single tape dealing with the 5 consecutive World Championships the Yankees won from 1949 to 1953, but that would just make too much sense. But for Yankee fans who actually remember a time when Subway Series were pretty much the norm in the Big Apple, this tape is a fun walk down memory lane.
