New Wave Theater IsTHE Definitive Look At LA's Punk Scene
I remember watching New Wave Theater on the USA Network in 1981 from my hometown of Canton, Ohio. My musical world before I watched New Wave Theater included Aerosmith and Boston. Well, needless to say, after watching bands like X, The Blasters, Fear and Circle Jerks on New Wave Theater, my mind opened up to a brand new world. This show singlehandedly made me into the hungry musical beast that I am today. The host of the show, the late Peter Ivers, was a loose-lipped, neo-beatnik who really understood and loved the Los Angeles scene. Most of the shows were recorded at Florentine Gardens in Hollywood (a club that is no more) and were produced with comedy bits in-between.

Some people who watch NWT might think the production is a bit dated. That might be understandable, but you have to realize that the show was produced on a tight budget by Mr. David Jove. Mr. Jove just let the cameras roll on the bands and gave Ivers and his wacky entourage the space to let their imaginations run wild. Mr. Jove was a true pioneer in music television. MTV should kiss that guy's ass!

And the best part of NWT is the music. You'll NEVER experience a music scene like the one that hit LA back in the early 80s again. EVER! Why?! Because the music industry today has changed the way kids develop their music. Back in the early 80s, there was no MTV or internet to shape the kids' idea of fashion and music. It was true DIY (Do It Yourself).

If you're a fan of REAL punk music, New Wave Theater is a MUST for your collection. It's a musical moment that will never happen again. Enjoy!
