Customer Reviews of Never Say Never Again
Never Say Never Again is a Bond film. Never Say Never Again is essentially a remake of Thunderball. Same story line, cast names (mostly), same basic idea. Except truly the films are totally different. Connery returns as James Bond for the finally time, and with him he brought a film which has been widely criticized as being a bad example for a James Bond film. How can you have a James Bond film without a James Bond Theme or an opening gun barrel? They could at least have had an opening cross hair or a pre-title sequence. When you look at it, many consider it an action film starring Sean Connery, whose name happens to be James Bond. Never Say Never Again is an interesting film to see, unfortunately, currently, those who haven't seen it probably won't.
The history of the film goes back to the 1950's when Bond author Ian Fleming teamed up with Kevin McClory to work on a screenplay. The screenplay never fell through, so Ian Fleming took the ideas from the screenplay and wrote the novel Thunderball. Kevin McClory saw a version of the novel, sued and eventually won the rights to the book. McClory then teamed up with Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman to produce the film Thunderball. The terms would be that McClory would give up his rights for 10 years and he would then be allowed to remake the film. 18 years later Never Say Never Again was born
So that is why Never Say Never Again is like that. Why it is so different from the other Bond films. 007 fans are split in half when it comes to accepting or not accepting it in the Bond family. The future of Never Say Never Again lies in the hands of MGM now. So it is up to them weather or not it will ever see the light of day Again.
I ask that MGM strongly look into re-releasing this title. What better way to get back at McClory then to make money off of something he fought so hard to make.
Also Kevin McClory I think you should put to rest your future Bond plans. You had your chance to make a Bond film, you did it, its over. Stop fighting so hard and enjoy the Bond films that are coming out.
Come on re-release this title.
Never Never Land
Never Say Never Again would be a fairly solid Bond film, if it were not a remake of an earlier adventure in the series, Thunderball. After years of rejecting the idea of playing the superspy again followng Diamonds Are Forever, Sean Connery, returns to the role. He is my favorite person in the part, for sure, and he's the only reason to watch this movie.
The story takes place at a time when Bond (Connery) is called out of retirement when the SPECTRE organization concocts its latest plan for worldwide domination. The agency's number 2 operative, Largo (Klaus Maria Brandauer), has managed to steal two cruise missiles armed with nuclear warheads, and Agent Number 1, Blofeld (Max von Sydow), has threatened to explode them in areas with large populations if a huge, and almost impossible, ransom demand from the NATO countries is not paid.
Director Irvin Kershner does his best to make the adventure watchable and not seem like a remake. The casting doesn't help you forget the far superior earlier version though. Brandauer isn't a very good Largo. In their scenes together, Connnery outacts him at every turn, even though the material is at times, over the top anyway. The Bond girls in the film, Barbara Carrera as Fatima and a young Kim Basinger as Domino, are beautiful--but since we know what their characters are all about going in--everything they do is muted. The script keeps the basic story in tact but again if you are a fan of Bond Thunderball is just too much of a classic to forget. Connery keeps his wits about him and even with its problems proves he's still got it.
Not suprisingly the DVD has no extras on it. MGM, the studio that owns the Bond franchise, likes to think this film doesn't exist. To some fans it doesn't--while I wouldn't go that far (because of Connery), I will say your best bet is to watch Thunderball instead
Not Bond
I pretty much agree with everyone else about this movie....but did you know that this is NOT an OFFICIAL James Bond movie? It is not part of the series. Need proof? Just search for any James Bond CD's in the Music section of Amazon.com and look through the playlists of the Theme Song CD's. Never Say Never Again is not on any of the lists. That's why this movie seems like a duplicate. It is a cheap knock-off of Thunderball.
